MLB | Jai Miller to play college football

Free-agent OF Jai Miller (Orioles) has decided to enroll at the University of Alabama for the spring 2013 semester with the intention of playing college football next fall. The 27-year-old Miller, who has played in the major leagues with the Florida Marlins, Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics, had committed to playing football at Stanford University coming out of high school before deciding to pursue a career in professional baseball instead. He had spoken to Alabama head coach Nick Saban about joining the team several weeks ago and is expected to play safety.

Orioles | Nick Markakis to have surgery Friday

Baltimore Orioles OF Nick Markakis (hand) will undergo surgery to remove his broken hamate bone in his right wrist Friday, June 1, and he will be placed on the disabled list. The team hopes he'll only be out three to four weeks. OFs Xavier Avery, Lew Ford, Jai Miller and Jamie Hoffmann are candidates to be brought up from the minors.
