Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks, Shane Victorino to DL

Fri, 24 May 2013 12:37:47 -0700

The Boston Red Sox placed 3B Will Middlebrooks (back) and OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 24, and activated C David Ross (concussion) from the seven-day disabled list and optioned C Ryan Lavarnway in corresponding moves. Also, RP Alfredo Aceves and SS Jose Iglesias were recalled from the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Iglesias should be a hot waiver pick-up this weekend in AL-only leagues and deep mixers if you're searching for infield depth. Iglesias was seeing time at third base in the minors, and he's starting at the hot corner Friday night. Adding third base to his position eligibility makes him even more attractive in deep leagues.

With Victorino on the DL, expect Daniel Nava to benefit the most from the increase in playing time, especially since the BoSox didn't elect to bring Jackie Bradley back into the outfield picture. Aceves is expected to provide depth in the bullpen.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks day-to-day

Thu, 23 May 2013 21:38:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said 3B Will Middlebrooks (back) is day-to-day after injuring his back, which may have initially happened when he was running out of the batter's box on Wednesday, May 22.

Fantasy Tip: Any Middlebrooks absence would open up time for Pedro Ciriaco at the hot corner for AL-only attention ... maybe in deep mixed leagues, too.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks shaking slump?

Thu, 16 May 2013 15:19:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (ribs) had a double and a home run Wednesday, May 15, and although he said he's still having trouble catching his breath and sleeping on his right side, it appears as though he's coming out of a slump that had his average at .200 and his on-base percentage sitting at .231. "Whether it coincides with the collision, and I mean that with all sincerity, he's not pulling off the ball as much," manager John Farrell said. "He's staying to the middle of the field, and that's when his power really shows and the bat stays in the zone longer."

Fantasy Tip: Middlebrooks has realistic 30-homer power at the hot corner, but his streakiness can become a problem for his fantasy baseball owners. He's typically been a slow starter in the minors, too, so keep that in mind. Middlebrooks' average was added by a fortunate hit rate last year, so don't expect him to repeat that.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks, David Ross day-to-day

Wed, 08 May 2013 12:26:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (ribs) does not have any rib fractures and is being listed as day-to-day by manager John Farrell. Middlebrooks isn't playing Wednesday, May 8, however. C David Ross (quadriceps) is also day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: If you own Middlebrooks, you need to get used to the fact that he's a streaky hitter and injury-prone. Have plenty of backup options at corner infield or third base as a result.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks slumping

Thu, 18 Apr 2013 12:11:13 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks is in a 2-for-31 slump and is sitting the bench Thursday, April 18. OF Jackie Bradley is also on the bench for the third straight game. Bradley is expected to return to the minors when DH David Ortiz (heels, Achilles') returns from the disabled list, possibly Friday, April 19.

Fantasy Tip: Middlebrooks is prone to stretches like this because of his lack of consistent contact. He also doesn't have the best hitting eye at the dish. It wouldn't be a bad idea to bench him until he gets going again.

Bradley can be dropped in all formats other than very deep AL-only leagues if you have the room to stash him. He's looked overmatched in the early going despite impressing everyone in spring training. Bradley is the future of the BoSox's outfield, but he may not be back up until later this season, unless there is an injury.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks swats three homers

Sun, 07 Apr 2013 21:53:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks smacked three home runs Sunday, April 7, against the Toronto Blue Jays, finishing with four hits and four RBIs. A Sox player has hit three homers in a game 26 times, and the last was 2B Dustin Pedroia, who accomplished the feat June 24, 2010, on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Middlebrooks is the youngest Sox player to go yard thrice since Hall of Famer Jim Rice turned the trick Aug. 29, 1977, also at age 24.
