The team would avoid paying Griese that roster bonus and free up approximately $4.5 million in salary cap space for 2006 by releasing Griese. It is believed the Buccaneers would have to offer Alstott a deal similar to his 2005 season, a $1.5 million base salary and $900,000 signing bonus, in order for him to return. Alstott's agent Ben Dogra said, "That would put us in the ballpark. We might have a chance with that. If it's less than that, then I don't think we could do it."
Buccaneers | Team working with Alstott to restructure and return - from www.KFFL.com Tue, 21 Feb 2006 19:29:10 -0800 Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers want FB Mike Alstott back in 2006 and they have been discussing a new contract with him. Buccaneers | Team wants Alstott to return - from www.KFFL.com Sun, 12 Feb 2006 06:11:19 -0800 Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers want FB Mike Alstott to return in 2006. The team needs Alstott to return. The vision the team once had of FB Rick Razzano replacing Alstott as their lead fullback has become a bit cloudy. In part because of his steroid-related four-game suspension, Razzano spent just four weeks on the active roster and just three weeks on the practice squad last year. As a result, the Buccaneers still aren't quite sure what they have in Razzano. Alstott doesn't expect to get the $3 million signing bonus and $2 million salary he's slated to receive, but he wants a respectable wage. A deal that guarantees he'll make a little more than the $1.5 million he earned last year probably would do the trick.
Buccaneers | Alstott considering return for 2006 - from www.KFFL.com Thu, 09 Feb 2006 12:15:15 -0800 Stephen F. Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers FB Mike Alstott is considering a return to the team for another season, according to Alstott's agent, Ben Dogra. "He loves to play the game and (the Buccaneers) were so close last year," Dogra said. "Nothing's been decided, but I think he'd like to play." Alstott is scheduled to earn $2 million in base salary in 2006, but his cap number could be higher if certain bonuses are reached. The Buccaneers are estimated to be as much as $19 million over the salary cap, so the team may have to restructure his contract to get under the cap by next month.
Buccaneers | Alstott may be back; if team wants him back - from www.KFFL.com Sun, 29 Jan 2006 07:06:17 -0800 Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports early indications are that FB Mike Alstott will return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006, if the team wants him back. Before heading home for the offseason, Alstott asked running backs coach Art Valero for an honest assessment. Valero didn't hesitate when he told Alstott he could still get it done. Head coach Jon Gruden is on record saying he would do anything in his power to convince Alstott to return.
Buccaneers | Allen will meet with Alstott soon - from www.KFFL.com Thu, 12 Jan 2006 15:47:25 -0800 Jim Flynn, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen said he will meet with RB Mike Alstott about his future with the team soon. Alstott has said he is undecided about retirement. "I've talked to Mike and we will talk again in the near future," said Allen. "We had a good discussion about many things, as we do, but not specifically him. Those discussions will continue. We just said we would get together later on and talk about (his future)." If he does decide to play, Alstott might be too expensive to keep around at his current rate of pay. He's under contract through 2008, but the final three years of Alstott's contract are voidable. Alstott's salary cap value is scheduled to go up from $2.393 million to $5.168 million in 2006. He's also scheduled to receive a $3 million roster bonus Mar. 3.

He left the Buccaneers' locker room Saturday night, Jan. 7, in tears, perhaps because it was for the final time. Though he said a decision on his future would come at a later date, Alstott's emotions and the fact he talked in the past tense seemed to indicate he has played his final game as a Buccaneer. "I've had a great year and I felt like I got back to the point that I had my first eight years of my career," Alstott said. "The decision will be made. I don't know when, but it's been fun."
