Chicago Cubs OF Alfredo Amezaga will compete for a utility middle infielder role, and he might be a solid backup to 2B Darwin Barney and SS Starlin Castro. He is a switch-hitter who can play three infield positions and all three outfield spots. The team went the entire 2011 without a backup to Castro, as they had to have Barney move over to shortstop when Castro missed five games.

Chicago Cubs 2B Darwin Barney re-discovered his swing in Atlanta over the weekend, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored Sunday, Aug. 14. Barney has collected seven hits over the past two games, raising his average from .282 to .293 in the process. He entered the game Saturday, Aug. 13, on a 2-for-20 (.100) slide.
