Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery, and he'll miss around a full year. The pain he felt during his throwing session Monday, April 14, made it clear to him that he needed to have the operation. Doctor James Andrews will do the procedure Tuesday, April 22.
Fantasy Tip: Erik Bedard and Cesar Ramos are now rounding out the rotation thanks to the injuries to Moore and Alex Cobb (oblique). Bedard should be your first target in AL-only leagues for the long-term, but Enny Romero can be put high on the radar in those formats, as well, as he'll likely see some time in the rotation before long.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) threw and did OK Monday, April 14, but no decision on whether he'll undergo surgery will be made today.
Fantasy Tip: It almost seems inevitable that Moore will have to undergo Tommy John surgery. Right now, the team is hoping he can avoid it through rehab, but that often turns out not to be the case. Stay tuned.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) aims to play catch in a few days to test his left elbow, which has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Updating previous reports, Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) is expected to determine Thursday, April 10, if he will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. Moore said he felt a pain when he threw his changeup in his last start that was similar to, but not as severe as, the pain in the same location that forced him to the disabled list last year. The team surmises the ligament tear is what has caused the gradual loss of velocity in his fastball.
Fantasy Tip: Moore could spend the next few weeks strengthening the area around the ligament and could be fine the rest of the season. Some pitchers make it multiple years before the ligament gives way. However, at 24 years old, the odds are they'll decide to get it repaired.

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said SP Matt Moore (elbow) saw a doctor and had another MRI exam Wednesday, April 9, and the team is discussing the next step. Maddon said surgery is not a "slam dunk" right now.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) will immediately visit Dr. James Andrews to have his elbow examined. Surgery may be needed to repair a possibly torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.
Fantasy Tip: It's possible they may use rehab instead to try repairing the ligament, but that process rarely works for the long term. Moore owners should be finding potential long-term replacements as we write this. This probably secures Jake Odorizzi's place in the rotation for some time, even after Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) returns. Cesar Ramos and Erik Bedard likely will be picked to take Moore's rotation spot; both are worth an AL-only gamble.

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) has an elbow injury which involves his ulnar collateral ligament, according to a source. If the tear is small enough, he might rehab and try to pitch through. However, this type of injury often ends up with Tommy John surgery.
Fantasy Tip: It is not yet known how much time Moore will miss, as he will have a second opinion, but Erik Bedard and Cesar Ramos are considered the favorites to replace Moore in the rotation. Nathan Karns and Mike Montgomery are also dark horses to fill in. Bedard is the best target for AL-only fantasy owners, as he could still be a nice source of strikeouts.
