Braves | Tommy Hanson named Opening Day starter

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez announced that SP Tommy Hanson will serve as the team's Opening Day starter Thursday, April 5, against the New York Mets. After an off day Friday, April 6, SPs Jair Jurrjens and Mike Minor will start the final two games of the Mets series. SP Brandon Beachy will open a three-game series against the Houston Astros April 9, with Hanson pitching on April 10 or April 11. The winner of the fifth-starter competition between Randall Delgado and Julio Teheran will start the game that Hanson doesn't pitch in. Jurrjens is scheduled to start the home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers April 13.

Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren indicated that the team's plan is to use SP Kris Medlen out of the bullpen, even though he'll receive a start in a minor league game Friday, March 23. He's given up one run in 10 spring innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Atlanta will choose between SPs Randall Delgado and Julio Teheran to open the year in the rotation.

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran gave up one run and three hits while walking one and striking out three in three innings of work in his second spring outing against the New York Yankees Friday, March 9. He allowed six runs to the Detroit Tigers in his spring debut. Teheran threw 27 of his 42 pitches for strikes Friday. He is competing for the No. 5 rotation spot this spring.

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran was pounded for seven earned runs in two innings Sunday, March 4, against the Detroit Tigers. All six of the hits he allowed were home runs. Teheran was hoping to compete for a spot in the tema's rotation. "It was a tough day for anyone to pitch," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "With the conditions we had today, I am not about to count anyone out. When the wind is blowing the way it was today, all you are asking for is trouble."

Braves | Mike Minor in lead for rotation spot

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor is in the lead for the No. 5 starting spot over SPs Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado. "I feel like I proved myself," Minor said. "I was in Triple-A all last year pretty much. The year before I had some time (in the majors). I'm getting older every year, so there's no reason for me to be sitting in Triple-A." Teheran or Delgado could also crack the rotation with SP Tim Hudson (back) out.
