Braves | Evan Gattis to play 1B Thursday

Tue, 16 Apr 2013 16:20:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis will play first base to remain in the lineup Thursday, April 18, with C Gerald Laird set to catch SP Julio Teheran against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "It's hard to take that bat out of the lineup," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I thought he was fine at first base. The only screw-up was that fly ball and I've seen Gold Glovers miss that play. I'm comfortable to run him out there." Gattis is hitting .324 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 34 at-bats entering Tuesday, April 16.

Fantasy Tip: For fantasy baseball purposes, this is the time to take advantage of Gattis' hot start, too. Freddie Freeman (oblique) will be back from the DL soon, and when Brian McCann (shoulder) returns, there will be considerably less PT for Gattis. Gonzalez isn't worried, saying he'll rest McCann often, but Gattis may cool off with less consistent at-bats.

Braves | Tim Hudson to start opening day

Thu, 21 Mar 2013 13:13:58 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Tim Hudson will start the team's opening day game April 1 against the Philadelphia Phillies. He'll be followed in the rotation by SPs Paul Maholm, Kris Medlen, Mike Minor and Julio Teheran. Hudson hasn't started on opening day since 2008.

Fantasy Tip: Hudson's valuable traits are slowly declining, and his drop in velocity will have side effects. He's more suited for inclusion in NL only leagues as rotation depth.

Braves | Impressed with Julio Teheran

Mon, 18 Mar 2013 14:26:17 -0700

The Atlanta Braves are impressed with SP Julio Teheran's modified repertoire this season, as he relies more on sinkers and an improved breaking pitch instead of the fastball-changeup mix he used in the minor leagues. Teheran is second in the Grapefruit League in strikeouts (25), is tied for first in innings (20) and is fourth in ERA (1.35). "He's really pounding the strike zone, and his two-seamer has really looked good," said SP Tim Hudson. "That's something he's been working on. He's using it to both sides of the plate. I think that's a great pitch for him because he doesn't have to be so precise with it – it's a contact pitch."

Fantasy Tip: There is excellent profit potential with this Bravos hurler after his demotion and struggles in the minors last season. He's already locked up the No. 5 rotation post, and he'll be a cheap arm in your drafts that will yield plenty of strikeout potential.

Braves | Julio Teheran wins rotation spot

Thu, 14 Mar 2013 12:27:54 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran, who held opponents to a .087 batting average and allowed four walks to 18 strikeouts this spring, will start the year in the team's starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: A late-season mechanical change that continued into the offseason has helped Teheran turn things around this spring. He has considerable upside in the Bravos' rotation and will likely come at a decent price based on his mediocrity in a small sample size at the major league level and his 2012 struggles on the farm.

Braves | Julio Teheran looking good

Fri, 01 Mar 2013 21:42:10 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran had a strong showing in winter ball, and he has carried over the momentum into spring training. He is giving manager Fredi Gonzalez and general manager Frank Wren more reason to believe Teheran can be the team's fifth starter. He is trying to hold off Sean Gilmartin for the job.

Braves | Two competing for rotation spot

Mon, 11 Feb 2013 16:45:26 -0800

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said SPs Julio Teheran and Sean Gilmartin are competing for the final rotation spot this spring, but Teheran is the favorite to win the job. "He looked different in winter ball," Gonzalez said of Teheran. "He looked like a guy who has pitched. Sometimes failure is a good teacher."

Braves | Julio Teheran regaining top form

Wed, 30 Jan 2013 17:26:39 -0800

Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren feels SP Julio Teheran regained his form while pitching in the Dominican Republic Winter League this winter. "I think we saw a guy who learned from some of the trials over the course of this past season and re-emerged as a top-notch prospect in the winter," Wren said. "He showed his pitchability and stuff that we didn't see a whole lot of during 2012. But he was really impressive in December." Teheran will enter camp as the favorite for the No. 5 rotation post. His poor 2012 season with Triple-A Gwinnett was based on mechanical issues, but he made some adjustments late in the season. Teheran, with the help of special assistant Dom Chiti, raised his glove, which helped Teheran regain more of a fluid and athletic delivery. He had an ERA of 3.23 in seven starts in winter league, allowing just two hits and throwing 16 2/3 scoreless innings in his last three starts.

Braves | Julio Teheran likely part of Justin Upton deal

Wed, 23 Jan 2013 15:56:12 -0800

The Atlanta Braves are likely to include SP Julio Teheran in any deal to acquire Arizona Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton. At least one other Atlanta pitching prospect, such as Ps Sean Gilmartin or Zeke Spruill, will need to be sent to Arizona, too. SS Nick Ahmed, could also interest the D-backs.
