Updating an earlier story, Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will release starting C Jeff Christy after he failed to reach a deal on a restructured contract. The Bucs requested last weekend that Christy drop his $2.405 million base salary to $1 million, with no opportunity to recoup the difference through incentives. Tampa Bay will save about $2.35 million on its 2003 cap when it officially releases Christy.

Updating previous reports, the Tampa Tribune reports the agent for Tampa Bay Buccaneers C Jeff Christy said Thursday he expects his client to either be released or asked to take a pay cut that would be unacceptable to him. “[Bucs General Manager] Rich [McKay] called and said he wants to talk about things, and I just don’t think there’s going to be a positive spin on it,” said Christy’s agent, Ralph Cindrich. “Jeff gets the feeling from talking to the coaches that it’s not going to be possible to work things out.” The team could see a salary cap savings of $2.35 million if they release Christy.
