The Chicago White Sox will recall SP Eric Stults to start the second game of a doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians Monday, May 7. The team optioned SP Dylan Axelrod after his start Sunday, May 6. He needed 99 pitches to make it through 4 1/3 innings in his start against the Detroit Tigers Sunday.

White Sox | Chris Sale moved back to bullpen

The Chicago White Sox have moved SP Chris Sale (elbow) back to the bullpen. Sale has been experiencing tenderness in his elbow recently. Sale will immediately assume the closer's role as a result. SP Dylan Axelrod will move into the starting rotation beginning Sunday, May 6, against the Detroit Tigers. Sale will be available to close starting Monday, May 7.

Fantasy Tip: Well then. Sale is widely owned, but he warrants an immediate pickup if he's somehow still available. The White Sox could change this arrangement later in the year, but it's unlikely, and in that case they'd probably wait until the late stages to do so in order to preserve his arm. Since Sale did the gig for a bit last season and has elite skills, he'll probably stave off Matt Thornton, Addison Reed and Hector Santiago for as long as Chicago wants to keep him in the role.

If a future change is made and Sale moves back to starting, Chicago probably wouldn't go back to Santiago. He's essentially at the back of the line, which makes him a safe drop in mixed formats. Thanks to their excellent peripherals, Thornton and Reed are still worth clinging to if deep leaguers are desperate.

Axelrod, meanwhile, is an AL-only grab that will have fleeting deep mixed utility, most likely based on matchups.

The Chicago White Sox placed RP Jesse Crain (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique Friday, April 27. His DL stint is backdated to Saturday, April 21. P Dylan Axelrod was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to take his spot on roster.

Chicago White Sox SPs Dylan Axelrod and Zach Stewart each pitched well in their Cactus League appearances Sunday, March 18. The two pitchers might end up joining RP Hector Santiago in claiming the club's final three bullpen spots. "It could be two, but we have more guys who are pitching well and it's tough to look at them and know exactly what you're needing right now," manager Robin Ventura said. "Both pitched impressively today."

Chicago White Sox Ps Dylan Axelrod, Charlie Leesman, Nestor Molina, Hector Santiago and Zach Stewart are likely to begin their careers working out of the bullpen rather than starting. "I know a lot of the time your first stint in the big leagues might happen to be something you haven't done before," Leesman said. "More likely than not it's a starter being a reliever. So what I did, I just tried to prepare myself as much as possible for that."
