The Carolina Panthers have hired former NFL WR Ricky Proehl as an offensive consultant, reports ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas, of ESPN.com. Proehl will primary work with wide receivers coach Fred Graves.

"This is it," said Proehl, who will be suiting up for his fourth Super Bowl. "I came back to this football team because I felt like this team had the best chance of getting to the Super Bowl and, luckily, I was right. This is it for me. This is my last game."

John Oehser, of Colts.com, reports Indianapolis Colts WR Ricky Proehl is expected to get an increased role in the team's offense with the loss of WR Brandon Stokley (Achilles') and TE Dallas Clark (knee) to injuries. "He'll step up," said QB Peyton Manning of Proehl. "I think if it was any other player, with less experience than Ricky, you'd have a point. This is a guy who has been in the league 16 years, who is very knowledgeable of football. He has picked up the system as quickly as anybody we've had here in the short two or three weeks he has been here." Proehl has 668 receptions for 8,871 yards and 54 touchdowns in his career. In Week 14, he caught two passes for 23 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ed Hardin, of the News-Record, reports free agent WR Ricky Proehl (Panthers) doesn't want his NFL football career to end, but he knows it's going to end, and possibly soon. Proehl will wait by the phone at his home in Greensboro this week for a job offer, and it won't be from the Carolina Panthers and it won't be as an NFL wide receiver. "I might just walk away," he said Monday, July 3. After three years with the Panthers, Proehl was hopeful for a fourth. "It's frustrating," Proehl said. "I was ready to play. I was going to play." He thought the Panthers wanted him. Proehl says he was told as much. If somebody gets hurt or if WR Keyshawn Johnson turns out to be a bad fit, the Panthers might call him. Proehl said he might not be waiting by then. He hopes to be working in television or radio, possibly working for an NFL team. It's what he planned to do all along once his playing career ended. Proehl said he will probably know something in the coming week. Proehl did say he has been contacted by several NFL teams.

Mike Garafolo, of the Star-Ledger, reports agent Alan Herman has had a preliminary conversation with the New York Giants about free agent WR Ricky Proehl (Panthers). Proehl wanted to return to the Panthers but realized his days in Carolina were over when the team signed WR Keyshawn Johnson. "At this point, I'm just trying to identify the places where Ricky would want to play," said Herman. "Obviously, coming from (New Jersey), the Giants were one of those places. But we haven't had any serious talks with them at this point. We've just touched base." Herman expects Proehl to finalize his list of targets Friday, March 31, or Saturday, April 1, at which point the agent will begin contract discussions with interested teams.

Updating previous reports, Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney would not dismiss the possibility of WR Ricky Proehl returning despite the signing of WR Keyshawn Johnson. Currently, there is question in regards to whether or not the team carries more than five active receivers.

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports the signing of WR Keyshawn Johnson by the Carolina Panthers leaves WR Ricky Proehl's future with the team uncertain. The Panthers have five wide receivers, not counting Proehl, and that is all they normally carry on their roster. It's possible the Panthers could re-sign Proehl, bring him to training camp and let him compete with WRs Drew Carter and Karl Hankton for the final spots, but this is a unique situation. If Proehl were to come back, it would be common decency to assure him a roster spot and promise he wouldn't be cut in training camp, but hat's a guarantee the Panthers might not be able to make.
