Mariners | Charlie Furbush throws on flat ground

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 22:41:45 -0700

Seattle Mariners P Charlie Furbush (biceps) threw long toss Monday, July 20, including some throws from 60 feet on flat ground. If he doesn't experience any setbacks he might throw a bullpen session as soon as Wednesday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain if Furbush will return in a starting role or if he'll be used out of the bullpen. Wait to see him officially return before he is trusted in FantasyScore again.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney not ready for closer role

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 17:00:20 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney is not ready to return to the team's closer role, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. McClendon said it's up to pitching coach Rick Waits as to when Rodney has fixed his mechanical issues and is ready to return to the role. Rodney was removed from the ninth-inning duties over the weekend and RP Carson Smith filled in to record the save Saturday, June 6. Rodney has given up a run in nine of his last 13 outings since May 4, and his ERA has risen to 6.94. However, McClendon doesn't think Smith is ready for the full-time closer duties, and he even mentioned RPs Charlie Furbush and Mark Lowe as candidates to see save chances. For now, Rodney will face left-handed hitters, who are hitting only .256 against him compared to .346 for right-handers. Rodney hasn't pitched since taking the loss last Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney should still be owned in all leagues, since McClendon isn't ruling out him returning to the closing role eventually. In the meantime, Smith should see the majority of the save chances, but there's a possibility Furbush or Lowe will sneak in for a closure or two. Obviously don't make much of an investment in the secondary candidates if you're desperate for saves.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney taking break from closing

Sun, 07 Jun 2015 19:44:59 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney wasn't available to pitch in almost any circumstance against the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday, June 7, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. Rodney was in the bullpen working on pitching mechanics with pitching coach Rick Waits, and McClendon said he's unsure how he'll work Rodney back into game situations. Rodney currently has three blown saves and a 6.94 ERA. RP Carson Smith figures to move into the closer role as a result, but the Mariners are hesitant to use Smith for three games in a row. Smith worked three times in four days late last month and the velocity on his power sinker was down and he admitted to being fatigued. As a result, the Mariners may not use Smith to start every inning in a save chance, and McClendon mentioned RP Charlie Furbush if the team is facing left-handed hitters.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is probably owned in most leagues already for his nice numbers as a setup man, but he should now be owned everywhere. Hang onto Rodney, as McClendon hasn't indicated that he won't be able to win the job back. But it's a good idea to bench Rodney for the foreseeable future, and hopefully you were able to handcuff Smith to him.

Mariners | Plenty of bullpen competition

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 14:55:08 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Charlie Furbush likely will have a roster spot to open the year, as manager Lloyd McClendon wants two left-handed relievers. The other could be one of RPs Lucas Luetge, Rafael Perez or David Rollins. RPs Yoervis Medina, Danny Farquhar, Tom Wilhelmsen, Dominic Leone and Carson Smith will likely battle for the other four bullpen slots outside of RP Fernando Rodney. Ps Mark Lowe and Erasmo Ramirez are also options.

Mariners | Charlie Furbush adjusted to new role

Mon, 05 May 2014 20:08:47 -0700

Updating a previous report, Seattle Mariners RP Charlie Furbush has been shifted to a reduced role, and manager Lloyd McClendon acknowledged the struggles of the pitcher. "Sure, I'm a little concerned. I'm concerned with his command, concerned with his ability to execute his pitchers," McClendon said Monday, May 5. "We're just going to have to continue to give him touch and feels in the bullpen because regardless of how disappointed I am in how he's going about it lately, he's a big, big part of what we're going to be and our success this year." Furbush is likely to be used against left-handed batters in a situational setting.

Mariners | Charlie Furbush financials

Wed, 18 Dec 2013 08:37:53 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Charlie Furbush will earn $750,000 next year as part of his one-year deal to avoid a potential dispute over arbitration eligibility. His eligibility is dependent on New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada, who is one day short of three years of major league service. If Tejada wins a grievance and gain a day of service time, Furbush (two years, 121 days) would also become eligible for arbitration.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen won't close for two or three games

Fri, 14 Jun 2013 18:26:39 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen will not close for at least the next two or three games. The team wants to see him work in non-save situations, working on better location for his pitches. Manager Eric Wedge said Friday, June 14, that the team will mix and match save opportunities, with no specific pitchers mentioned.

Fantasy Tip: Don't drop Wilhelmsen anywhere yet. Eric Wedge seemingly is aiming to get him back into the role; the goal of having the righty work on his pitches says this looks temporary. However, Carter Capps has closer-like skills, and if Wilhelmsen stumbles, Capps could take over. He's the first one you should pick up. Of course, it's stated to be a mix-and-match situation, so other relievers, such as Yoervis Medina and Charlie Furbush (for lefty situations) could be used and net AL-only managers some points, as well. If this problem lingers, maybe Stephen Pryor (lat) will have a say later in the year.
