Marlins | Steve Cishek no longer sole closer

Mon, 20 May 2013 22:20:36 -0700

Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond said following the game Monday, May 20, that Steve Cishek is no longer the only closer. "We're going to use everybody," he said, mentioning Cishek, Chad Qualls and Mike Dunn by name. Qualls was warming up Monday when Miami was holding a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning but was used in the ninth inning in a non-save situation. Left-handed bats are hitting .333 versus Cishek, while right-handed hitters are hitting just .111.

Fantasy Tip: A.J. Ramos might be included in this group as well. Still, this is looking like a messy situation for fantasy purposes. If Cishek improves on his weakness, he'd probably be given a shot to get the job back all to himself, but Redmond won't look to do that in the near future without a clear turnaround from Cishek. Don't drop him, though, as he's probably still the lead option.

Dunn, who likely was unavailable Monday after pitching on two straight days, is your best bet for speculation because he's the chief late-innings lefty and has so far been OK versus right-handed bats. Qualls and Ramos could sneak in deep-league value, as well, but they may cancel each other out often.

Marlins | Steve Cishek working on slider

Mon, 15 Apr 2013 11:48:20 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek has thrown in the bullpen every day since his last save chance Sunday, April 7, except for Wednesday, April 10, and Thursday, April 11. He's allowed four runs and four hits in 1 1/3 innings in his last two outings. "I just want to get a feel for my slider again because I've been throwing it a lot in bullpens," Cishek said. "Without it I'm a one-pitch pitcher for the most part. It's important."

Fantasy Tip: Cishek is a low-end closer, mainly because he pitches for arguably the weakest team in the league, meaning he won't receive many save chances. On top of it, he's off to a rough start. He can perform well in the closer role if he is consistent with his slider, but how often will those closures come?

Marlins | Steve Cishek working on changeup

Tue, 19 Mar 2013 15:02:44 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek is trying to refine his changeup this spring, and he worked on it in a minor league game Tuesday, March 19. Manager Mike Redmond said it's important for a sidearm pitcher like Cishek to constantly evolve.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek will come as a cheap source of saves because of his lack of experience and the fact that he plays for a team that is pretty much already penciled in to finish last in the NL East. If he continues to dominate righty sticks and exhibits good control, he'll help your pitching cats even if he doesn't register a ton of saves.

Marlins | Confident in Steve Cishek

Sun, 17 Feb 2013 18:51:24 -0800

The Miami Marlins are confident with RP Steve Cishek serving as the closer in 2013. Cishek posted 15 saves while allowing a .183 average with runners in scoring position (RISP). The bullpen depth after Cishek is worrisome after that.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek might be a solid low-end fantasy closer in most formats, as when the Marlins actually do win a game, they will be closer and in need of Cishek.

Marlins | Manager still thinks team is better with Heath Bell as closer

Thu, 09 Aug 2012 10:23:56 -0700

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said he still believes the team is better with RP Heath Bell as the closer because he is not suited for pitching in the seventh and eighth inning while RP Steve Cishek has been successful in that role. Guillen said he has talked with pitching coach Randy St. Claire about the possibility of switching Bell's and Cishek's role.

Marlins | Expected to use closer committee

Tue, 10 Jul 2012 16:14:53 -0700

The Miami Marlins are likely to install a closer-by-committee setup after the All-Star break. Ozzie Guillen told "The Dan LeBatard Show" on Miami's 790 The Ticket that he plans to chat with the struggling Heath Bell in the next few days about the arrangement. Though Miami will mix and match, Steve Cishek is expected to get the first shot at becoming the primary option, with southpaw Randy Choate possibly getting chances soon against left-handed bats. Other arms that'll earn consideration are Edward Mujica (toe), who's slated to return from the disabled list this weekend, and Juan Oviedo, whose suspension for his identity fraud ends July 23.

Fantasy Tip: Bell pitched well for a spell and again probably has a shot to regain his manager's trust, but that'll be more difficult to do a second time. Cishek has been the club's most reliable reliever and is the obvious fantasy target, in all formats, initially. Oviedo must prove that he's capable of retiring major leaguers consistently again after a long layoff. He's an OK target in deep leagues. Choate is probably worth owning only in NL games.
