Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Bengals released their depth chart Monday, Aug. 29, which showed injured S Kim Herring (shoulder) listed as the No, 3 strong safety. S Kevin Kaesviharn was listed as the starter, and rookie free agent Herana-Daze Jones was No. 2. "It has a lot to do with his injury. Move to the back," head coach Marvin Lewis said when asked about Herring's place on the depth chart. "We know we're not going to have him for a while, if at all. That's the way it is."

Mitchell has the edge because he's more physical and durable than Herring. A third player could enter the fray at training camp, S Reggie Myles. Myles, a former cornerback, is an aggressive player who gained 10 pounds to push his weight to 195.

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals SS Kim Herring is ready to maintain his starting strong safety job during the offseason, even if the team addresses the position early in the NFL Draft. "[Last year] I had prepared all year to play free safety," Herring said. "So I worked out differently and prepared differently, and then suddenly I got thrown into strong and physically I wasn't prepared to play it. Now, I've changed my mentality and changed my workout. I'm preparing the same way I did when I was in Baltimore, knowing I'm playing strong." Herring currently tops the Bengals' depth chart at strong safety.

Updating a previous story, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, Cincinnati Bengals S Kim Herring (forearm) had X-rays on his left forearm following Week 13's game against the Baltimore Ravens that proved negative. The official diagnosis for the injury is a bruise. Herring's status for Week 14 has not yet been determined.
