The Associated Press reports Oakland Raiders SS Adam Archuleta will be moved to linebacker, according to head coach Lane Kiffin. Archuleta will compete for the team's starting strongside linebacker spot with LB Robert Thomas, LB Sam Williams and LB Ricky Brown. "We're going to play him at linebacker and special teams and see what he can do for us," Kiffin said. "We worked him out this morning and he moves around extremely well. Last offseason, the Redskins outbid the Bears for the services of Archuleta, who played under Bears head coach Lovie Smith while Smith was still a member of the St. Louis Rams coaching staff. A new rule allows Archuleta to hit the market at the outset of free agency and the Redskins will likely release him in early March.

Archuleta has a $5 million option bonus in March and if the team decides to release him before then, Archuleta would be owed the second $5 million payment; his base salaries the next three years would be guaranteed at a sum equaling $5 million whether he is on the roster or not.

The Associated Press reports Washington Redskins S Adam Archuleta has not played a snap on defense in seven weeks. Head coach Joe Gibbs and assistant Gregg Williams have not offered an explanation for the benching. Archuleta said, "Do I deserve an explanation? I don't know if an explanation matters anymore because what's done is done. I pretty much know what's going on. I pretty much know what it all stems from." Archuleta did not go into detail, but he added he hopes the team will be more upfront with him when they meet for exit interviews next week. "I'm a grown man. I don't like getting lied to," Archuleta added. "All people want is for people to be straight up with them. I don't mind bad news. I don't mind negativity. I don't mind if somebody says to my face what my flaws are and what I'm doing wrong and what kind of person they think I am." Archuleta was signed in March to the richest contract for a safety in NFL history.
