The Associated Press reports Oakland Raiders SS Adam Archuleta will be moved to linebacker, according to head coach Lane Kiffin. Archuleta will compete for the team's starting strongside linebacker spot with LB Robert Thomas, LB Sam Williams and LB Ricky Brown. "We're going to play him at linebacker and special teams and see what he can do for us," Kiffin said. "We worked him out this morning and he moves around extremely well. He was in very good shape so we're going to give him a chance."

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Bob Babich has been pleased so far with Bears SS Adam Archuleta, who will likely draw tight ends and backs in coverage assignments. "I know this, he's playing well for us," said Babich. "We're very pleased with not only his in-the-box skills, but the way he's playing the deep middle third and the way he's playing the deep half. He's doing a good job. He's showing DB skills back there. I don't know what the knocks on him have been. Obviously, if we thought he had a knock, we wouldn't have brought him here."

John Mullin, of the Chicago Tribune, reports should the Washington Redskins decide to part ways with S Adam Archuleta this offseason, the Chicago Bears might express interest in the veteran safety. Last offseason, the Redskins outbid the Bears for the services of Archuleta, who played under Bears head coach Lovie Smith while Smith was still a member of the St. Louis Rams coaching staff. A new rule allows Archuleta to hit the market at the outset of free agency and the Redskins will likely release him in early March.

Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports if the Washington Redskins decide to release S Adam Archuleta after the season, they will face a salary cap charge of $9 million, but they could decide to spread that over the next two years with about $1.5 million counting against the 2007 cap. Archuleta has a $5 million option bonus in March and if the team decides to release him before then, Archuleta would be owed the second $5 million payment; his base salaries the next three years would be guaranteed at a sum equaling $5 million whether he is on the roster or not.

The Associated Press reports Washington Redskins S Adam Archuleta has not played a snap on defense in seven weeks. Head coach Joe Gibbs and assistant Gregg Williams have not offered an explanation for the benching. Archuleta said, "Do I deserve an explanation? I don't know if an explanation matters anymore because what's done is done. I pretty much know what's going on. I pretty much know what it all stems from." Archuleta did not go into detail, but he added he hopes the team will be more upfront with him when they meet for exit interviews next week. "I'm a grown man. I don't like getting lied to," Archuleta added. "All people want is for people to be straight up with them. I don't mind bad news. I don't mind negativity. I don't mind if somebody says to my face what my flaws are and what I'm doing wrong and what kind of person they think I am." Archuleta was signed in March to the richest contract for a safety in NFL history.

"It was between here and Chicago," Archuleta said at his introductory news conference in Washington. "I played in a cover-2 system most of my life. I knew it inside out and I had great success with Lovie and what we did with the Rams. I felt like it was going to take a lot to make me not go to Chicago." That the Bears pursued Archuleta quietly yet aggressively speaks volumes about concerns with S Mike Brown's (calf) health and the recovery of promising newcomer S Brandon McGowan (knee), who has a serious knee injury.

The Associated Press reports the Washington Redskins are targeting free agent WR Antwaan Randle El (Steelers) via free agency, according to a league official. He spoke on condition of anonymity because under league rules, the team is not allowed to contact the players until the market opens at 12:01 a.m. EST Saturday, March 11. Randle El is one of four free agents the Reskins are targeting. As noted earlier, the other three are free agent WR Brandon Lloyd (49ers), LB/DE Andre Carter (49ers) and S Adam Archuleta (Rams).
