Athletics | Ryan Madson out as closer?

Sun, 29 May 2016 17:08:22 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson was used in the eighth inning against the Detroit Tigers Sunday, May 29, and he struck out one in a scoreless inning. RP Sean Doolittle picked up the save.

Fantasy Tip: Madson blew two of his last three save chances, and he may have cost himself the closer's role. He is worth holding on to for now, but grab Doolittle if he is still available in your league.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle closes it out

Sun, 29 May 2016 17:04:05 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle picked up his first save since April 20 and his third overall, striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning against the Detroit Tigers Sunday, May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Madson handled the eighth inning, so the move could signal a changing of the guard in the ninth inning. Hang on to Madson for now, but Doolittle needs to be owned in all formats.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle still the closer

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 17:08:50 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle remains the A's closer despite RP Ryan Madson earning a save Wednesday, April 6, according to manager Bob Melvin. However, Melvin said he's open to using both relievers in the role depending on the circumstances. "If there is some matchup in the eighth that would suggest more of a lefty ... we would make an adjustment that way," Melvin said. "But as we sit here Sean's our closer when you're breaking down where our bullpen is."

Fantasy Tip: So basically Doolittle is the preferred ninth-inning option for Melvin, but the skipper isn't afraid to play the matchups and use Madson occasionally to close out games. Doolittle remains a low-end RP2, while Madson gains some value with more save chances expected. Scoop him up immediately if he's still available in your league.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle pitches Wednesday

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 15:02:00 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (triceps) threw 22 to 23 pitches in a minor league game Wednesday, March 23, and felt good. Doolittle allowed a run but worked on his changeup and slider.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is working his way back from an injury setback, but he has time to be ready for opening day, barring a setback. Injuries ruined his 2015 season, but Doolittle was a top-tier closer for Oakland in 2014, so it's not impossible for him to return to that this year. Draft him as a low-end second fantasy closer in the later rounds.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle feels great

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 11:46:13 -0700

Updating a previous report, Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (triceps) threw a 20-plus pitch side session Monday, March 21, and felt great. He will throw in a minor league game Wednesday, March 23, and is 100%.

Fantasy Tip: Good news here. It looks like he'll be ready to resume ninth-inning closing duties for opening day unless he has another setback. Injuries will have many fantasy owners hesitant for good reason, but don't forget Doolittle was a top-tier reliever in 2014 when he was healthy. Look to him as a low-cost second fantasy stopper.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle throwing bullpen

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 10:22:55 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (triceps) will throw a bullpen session Monday, March 21, and could be back in a game soon if he doesn't have any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: An injury ruined Doolittle's 2015 season, so this is perplexing to fantasy owners. When healthy, though, Doolittle showed in 2014 that he can be a top fantasy closer, so he's still worth drafting as a No. 2 reliever, but keep Ryan Madson at arm's reach in case Doolittle has another setback and won't be ready for the start of the season.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle battling triceps injury

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 14:16:05 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (triceps) has been slowed with a slight triceps strain but is still expected to be ready for opening day barring any further setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle has been sidelined since he made his third Cactus League appearance on March 13, but threw from flat ground on Sunday and is schedule to pitch off a mound Monday. The 29-year-old, who is slated to begin the season as Oakland's closer, makes for a serviceable low-end second closer in fantasy.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle back to normal

Fri, 26 Feb 2016 13:27:42 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle "looks like the Sean Doolittle of the past. Night and day," said manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: Some fantasy folks will have forgotten about Doolittle. But remember he struck out a whopping 12.8 hitters per nine innings, had a 2.73 ERA and saved 22 games in 2014. If he's back to full health, he's a bargain as a second or third fantasy closer this year.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle working on new pitch

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 14:31:18 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle joked that he's in the best shape of his life this spring and entered workouts fully healthy after missing most of last year with shoulder issues. Doolittle also has developed a new pitch with help from his brother Ryan. Sean Doolittle is attempting to learn a split-changeup from his brother.

"The grip is supposed to do most of the work," Sean said. "There's no spin, there's no hand action involved, it's just grip it and rip it. I've been very encouraged early on by how it's gone, so I'm excited to continue to work on it and see how it plays against hitters."

Fantasy Tip: Injury wiped him out last year, but you can't just assume he'll immediately return to his elite 2014 form. He's a risk because of fly balls allowed, but he has typical closer stuff with a lot of K's. His risk is mitigated as your second or third closer.

Athletics | Ryan Madson expected to be setup man

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 10:02:54 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson is expected to serve as the eighth-inning setup man for RP Sean Doolittle, with RPs John Axford and Liam Hendriks.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is coming off an injury marred season, so Madson, and in deeper leagues, Axford, makes sense as fantasy handcuffs to Doolittle. Madson could also be useful for his strikeouts abilities in deeper leagues.
