Athletics | Sean Doolittle making progress

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 19:15:03 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) has started doing "sock throws," or throwing balls the length of a sanitary sock, which limits the amount of strain on the shoulder and which is the first step before playing catch.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle has a ways to go before he is able to return to the big club. With the closer situation rather shaky in Oakland, it's possible Doolittle could get a look in the role by the end of the season if he can return and stay healthy. However, don't expect that until at least September, if not 2017.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle could play catch

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 12:41:55 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) could resume playing catch next week.

Fantasy Tip: No official timetable has been established for Doolittle's return. He is 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA and four saves through 35 games this year, with eight walks and 35 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings, and doesn't have much value outside of AL-only leagues as help for the ERA and WHIP categories.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle to visit doctor

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 17:37:04 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is scheduled to visit a doctor Friday, July 15, to find out when he can resume throwing. He said he has been feeling better in the last five days.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Doolittle isn't worth stashing outside of AL-only fantasy leagues, although he has had a decent season. The 29-year-old southpaw is 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA and four saves through 35 games, with eight walks and 35 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle has labrum issue

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 10:58:47 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is being shut down from throwing due to "subtle changes" in his labrum, according to manager Bob Melvin. An MRI exam showed inflammation in the front of his left shoulder after he dealt with a rotator-cuff injury in 2015. There is no specific timetable for Doolittle's return.

Fantasy Tip: This is a troubling development for Doolittle, who dealt with a serious shoulder ailment last year. He thinks it's not related, but stay tuned. Since he could be out a while, Doolittle can likely be dumped in most deeper leagues. Ryan Madson gains a stronger hold on the ninth inning as a result.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle placed on DL

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 14:05:53 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain Thursday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is a low-end own in deep mixed leagues because of his cross-category production pitching in high-leverage situations. He has two wins and four saves with a 2.93 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 35 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings. With that said, he likely isn't worth stashing. Ryan Madson's hold on the closer role tightens with Doolittle injured, too.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle's shoulder barking

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 16:20:24 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is dealing with minor shoulder soreness after a big workload last week, and he may not be available to pitch Wednesday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle has four saves on the year and a sub-3.00 ERA. He has value in deeper leagues as the main handcuff to Ryan Madson. With Madson throwing two innings last night and Doolittle possibly unavailable, too, John Axford could be in line for a save chance this evening.

Athletics | Teams interested in Sean Doolittle

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 19:32:51 -0700

The Oakland Athletics are drawing trade interest in RP Sean Doolittle, according to sources. The demand is expected to rise even higher if the New York Yankees do not deal RP Aroldis Chapman and/or Andrew Miller.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle has a bright future, but he is best used in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues for help in the ERA and WHIP categories. A move to a contender would likely mean a setup role and not a return to ninth-inning duties.

Athletics | Ryan Madson out as closer?

Sun, 29 May 2016 17:08:22 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson was used in the eighth inning against the Detroit Tigers Sunday, May 29, and he struck out one in a scoreless inning. RP Sean Doolittle picked up the save.

Fantasy Tip: Madson blew two of his last three save chances, and he may have cost himself the closer's role. He is worth holding on to for now, but grab Doolittle if he is still available in your league.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle closes it out

Sun, 29 May 2016 17:04:05 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle picked up his first save since April 20 and his third overall, striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning against the Detroit Tigers Sunday, May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Madson handled the eighth inning, so the move could signal a changing of the guard in the ninth inning. Hang on to Madson for now, but Doolittle needs to be owned in all formats.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle still the closer

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 17:08:50 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle remains the A's closer despite RP Ryan Madson earning a save Wednesday, April 6, according to manager Bob Melvin. However, Melvin said he's open to using both relievers in the role depending on the circumstances. "If there is some matchup in the eighth that would suggest more of a lefty ... we would make an adjustment that way," Melvin said. "But as we sit here Sean's our closer when you're breaking down where our bullpen is."

Fantasy Tip: So basically Doolittle is the preferred ninth-inning option for Melvin, but the skipper isn't afraid to play the matchups and use Madson occasionally to close out games. Doolittle remains a low-end RP2, while Madson gains some value with more save chances expected. Scoop him up immediately if he's still available in your league.
