Cardinals | Bullpen roles not set

Wed, 14 Mar 2012 13:05:27 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Mitchell Boggs is using a modified split-fingered pitch that goes along with his hard sinking fastball. Manager Mike Matheny is approaching Boggs with a "blank slate" approach with RP Jason Motte entrenched as the closer. RP Fernando Salas is most likely to serve as the eighth-inning setup man over RP Eduardo Sanchez. RP Kyle McClellan is another setup option, but he could be used as trade bait in spring training. RPs Scott Linebrink and Marc Rzepczynski are other candidates for setup work, but Matheny isn't making any assumptions.

Wed, 29 Feb 2012 19:10:15 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals RP Marc Rzepczynski credited RP Octavio Dotel (now with the Detroit Tigers) with helping him with his confidence down the stretch last season. "Having Dotel there meant a lot to me," Rzepczynski said. "He just said, 'Go out there and trust your stuff.' I knew that I would have a (disappointing) game here and there. There was a game in the playoffs (against Philadelphia) where I gave up three singles. But I didn't let it bother me. I went out the next day with a fresh outlook." He has a lot more confidence heading into the new season. RP Arthur Rhodes was also credited with helping the youngster.
