Blue Jays | Brett Cecil makes spring debut

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:29:25 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil (shoulder) made his spring debut Thursday, March 26, pitching one inning and recording a strikeout. He said the plan is to take a couple days off, then pitch in back-to-back games and proceed from there.

Fantasy Tip: Over the past two seasons, Cecil has finished 29 games and recorded six saves with a 2.76 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 146 strikeouts through 114 innings. He is expected to be ready for opening day and will serve as the closer. Currently, Cecil is a late-round bargain for saves, but expect his name to begin being called earlier and earlier in drafts as the season approaches, especially if there aren't any additional setbacks.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil will be closer

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 07:13:29 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil has been named the closer for the start of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Cecil was considered the favorite for the job and now has been named the closer, but it is not known if he could lose the job if he struggles early. Owners could consider selecting Cecil in the later rounds of drafts since he is now a closer.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil to pitch in a game

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 09:16:26 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil (shoulder) is scheduled to pitch one inning in a minor league game Saturday, March 21, and will pitch in another game Tuesday, March 24, if things go well in his first outing.

Fantasy Tip: Cecil is still a candidate for the closer job, so owners should monitor his situation over the next few weeks. Owners could consider Cecil in the later rounds of drafts because of his save potential, but he is still a valuable pitcher even if he does not win the closer job.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil to throw

Sat, 14 Mar 2015 07:10:41 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil (shoulder) is scheduled to throw 10 pitches during a bullpen session Saturday, March 14.

Fantasy Tip: Cecil is working his way back from a shoulder injury but there is no timetable for when he will return to the mound. Cecil may still be a candidate for the team's closer role but may not win the job since he is missing time. He could be an option in later rounds of drafts because of his save potential.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil may miss 10 days

Sat, 07 Mar 2015 07:16:02 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil (shoulder) could be sidelined for around 10 days after he underwent an MRI on his injured shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Cecil is expected to be a candidate for the closer position, but he likely will take some time off to make sure he can recover from his injury. Cecil could be an option for owners looking for saves later in drafts, but he should also be valuable even if he is used in a setup role.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil skips scheduled inning

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 14:42:08 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil (shoulder) did not pitch his scheduled inning Friday, March 6, because his should is "a little tender," according to manager John Gibbons. Gibbons noted it is not considered a big deal.

Fantasy Tip: Although the Toronto bullpen could be a year-long headache for fantasy owners, Cecil has performed extremely well in late-inning duty. He has finished 29 games and recorded six saves with a 2.76 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and a 11.5 K/9 mark over the past two seasons since moving to the bullpen. He is a viable speculation pick late in drafts for saves, and his impressive ratios and strikeout potential can play in deep mixed leagues without the saves.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil may not win closer job

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 10:20:54 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil, who has been great in a late-inning role the last two years, has the skills to be the team's ninth inning guy, but manager John Gibbons said Cecil may not win the role. SP Aaron Sanchez wants to win a spot in the starting rotation, but many believe he's the club's best option for closer. Gibbons likes to use Cecil in high-stakes situations prior to the ninth inning. "It could be one of those deals where one night he might be closing, the other night he might have to come in at the end of the seventh or eighth inning," Gibbons said.

Fantasy Tip: Some confusion could be cleared up if Sanchez outright wins a job in the starting rotation. Even then, though, this could become a closer-by-committee between Cecil and Aaron Loup. Toronto's closer battle is worth watching intently this spring. Right now, Cecil is the best late-round gamble, but things could be frustrating in this bullpen for fantasy owners.
