Blue Jays | Brett Cecil has increased velocity

Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:16:38 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil is throwing his fastball at 93 mph compared to 89 mph last season. One of the reasons is Cecil's use of a weighted ball during a throwing program in the offseason. Manager John Gibbons also noticed that Cecil was using his offspeed pitches regularly, and it has led to better results. Cecil has given up only two earned runs in 11 1/3 innings this season.

Blue Jays | Two make roster

Wed, 27 Mar 2013 13:45:18 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays Ps Brett Cecil and Jeremy Jeffress have made the opening day roster and will start in the bullpen. The team is starting the year with eight pitchers in the bullpen. When 3B Brett Lawrie (oblique) returns from his injury, the team is expected to carry only seven relievers, meaning either Cecil or Jeffress may be sent down. Both pitchers are out of minor league options.

Toronto Blue Jays RPs Casey Janssen, Sergio Santos, Darren Oliver and Steve Delabar are all locks for the bullpen, and RP Esmil Rogers, who is out of options, is likely to have the fifth spot locked up. RPs Jeremy Jeffress, Brett Cecil, Aaron Loup and J.A. Happ will battle for the final two spots.

Blue Jays | Two pitchers out of options

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 19:24:18 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays SP Brett Cecil and RP Jeremy Jeffress are both out of options and therefore must be exposed on waivers before they can be sent to the minors. That likely means each has a leg up in the hunt for a spot in Toronto's bullpen.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil not worried about velocity

Sat, 16 Jun 2012 22:10:05 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Brett Cecil saw a drop in velocity last season, and the problems continued in the spring. Cecil has reportedly added a few miles per hour to his fastball, but said that is something he is no longer concerned about. "The important thing is how to pitch," Cecil said. "I don't know what my velocity is going to be on Sunday, nor do I care. In 2011, it was a little bit different. I didn't know what it was going to be, but I cared what it was going to be. I wanted it to be back where it was, and now it's just been a season focusing on keeping the ball down and making my pitches move on both sides of the plate - and pitching on both sides of the plate."
