Rockies | Jorge De La Rosa hurls six no-hit innings

Mon, 13 May 2013 00:32:45 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa, who has had one complete game in his major-league career, held the St. Louis Cardinals hitless for the first six innings Sunday, May 12, at Busch Stadium before 3B David Freese singled past the sprawling attempt of Rockies 1B Jordan Pacheco with two out in the seventh.

Rockies | Expected to add Ryan Wheeler

Thu, 25 Apr 2013 14:10:37 -0700

The Colorado Rockies are expected to call up 3B Ryan Wheeler Thursday, April 25, after 1B Todd Helton (forearm) has missed the last five games with a sore left forearm. Helton could land on the disabled list. Wheeler is hitting .348 with six extra-base hits in 15 games with Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Fantasy Tip: Jordan Pacheco and Michael Cuddyer have been splitting time at first base with Helton sidelined, and that's expected to continue if Helton lands on the DL. Wheeler will likely just be used for infield depth, so he'll only carry value in NL-only formats.

Rockies | Todd Helton hopes to play

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 14:52:53 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Todd Helton (forearm) hopes to play in Game 2 of the team's doubleheader Tuesday, April 23, after straining his left forearm last week. However, with temperatures very low, manager Walt Weiss didn't expect to play Helton. He received a cortisone shot in his forearm and was feeling better Tuesday, but it was still stiff and swollen.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Helton is out, Jordan Pacheco will benefit with increased playing time. However, it looks like Helton can avoid a trip to the DL.

Rockies | Keeping open mind on 3B

Thu, 21 Feb 2013 13:22:01 -0800

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss is keeping an open mind when it comes to the competition for the starting third base job this spring. 3B Chris Nelson is the favorite for the spot because of his bat as he competes with INFs Jordan Pacheco, DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado. However, Nelson's defense may set him back. Nelson is leaner this spring after doing speed training with Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward and Baltimore Orioles OF Xavier Avery in the offseason. "I don't want to feel heavy legs again in spring. I really worked out on it. I am sore, but it's not the heavy sore like before," Nelson said. "I am going out there every day, competing, taking nothing for granted. Sometimes things take longer than you expect because you have to learn along the way."

Rockies | Wilin Rosario could hit fifth

Thu, 14 Feb 2013 17:30:26 -0800

Colorado Rockies C Wilin Rosario could hit fifth in the lineup this year with OF Carlos Gonzalez hitting third and SS Troy Tulowitzki in the cleanup spot. OF Dexter Fowler is the leading candidate to hit leadoff, and 2B Josh Rutledge and 3B Jordan Pacheco both are candidates to hit No. 2. "There will be some moving parts in the lineup. When we start up, we may fall into patterns, but it comes down to communicating with guys. If there's something a little different, I'll mention it to them," manager Walt Weiss said.

Rockies | Jordan Pacheco works on catching drills

Sat, 02 Feb 2013 10:13:59 -0800

Colorado Rockies 3B/C Jordan Pacheco recently spent several days working with team catching instructor Jerry Weinstein in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with an emphasis on blocking drills and improving throwing mechanics. He could see more time behind the plate in spring training, as a result of C Ramon Hernandez playing for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, although Hernandez and C Wilin Rosario are still expected to get the bulk of the work at catcher during the regular season.

Rockies | Jonathan Herrera avoids arbitration

Wed, 23 Jan 2013 13:48:28 -0800

The Colorado Rockies avoided arbitration with INF Jonathan Herrera Wednesday, Jan. 23, by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 deal. Herrera isn't a lock to make the roster this spring with INF Josh Rutledge shifting over to second base. INFs Chris Nelson, Jordan Pacheco, DJ LeMahieu and Ryan Wheeler will compete at third base. Herrera may compete directly with LeMahieu for a bench spot.

Rockies | Nolan Arenado on WBC roster

Mon, 14 Jan 2013 09:53:38 -0800

Colorado Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado is on the preliminary roster for Puerto Rico for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. However, he is a long shot to play in the tournament since he'll be competing for a starting job at third base in spring training. INFs Jordan Pacheco, Chris Nelson and Ryan Wheeler will be competing with Arenado at the hot corner.

Rockies | Todd Helton to return

Wed, 09 Jan 2013 13:34:01 -0800

Colorado Rockies 1B Todd Helton (hip), at age 39, will return for another season. Helton has put his surgically repaired hip through "way more violent" activities during training, and he is confident he will be able to swing a bat. He expects to be ready for the start of the regular season, which means he likely won't play many games in spring training. Helton expects to play first base on a regular basis. OFs Michael Cuddyer and Tyler Colvin and 3B Jordan Pacheco could all spell Helton at first from time to time.
