Sat, 14 Oct 2006 11:51:02 -0700

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams PK Jeff Wilkins is on pace to shatter several NFL records. Wilkins has 18 field goals through the first five games, putting him on pace for a season total of 58 field goals. The record for field goals in a season is 40, set by Arizona Cardinals PK Neil Rackers in 2005. He is also on pace for 67 field goal attempts, which would beat the previous record of 49 field goal attempts held by former PKs Bruce Gossett in 1966 and Curt Knight in 1971. Former Green Bay Packers RB/PK Paul Hornung's record of 176 points scored in 1960 is in danger of falling to Wilkins as well. The Rams kicker is on pace to score 195 points.

Rams | Waiting For Offense To Get Going

Sat, 29 Sep 2001 22:57:21 -0700

The Associated Press reports despite scoring over 30 points last week, St. Louis Rams QB Kurt Warner is not happy with the team's offensive production. He rated his unit a C-plus or B-minus. Two items stand out so far, PK Jeff Wilkins, who had 17 FGs while injured last year, already has five this season, and Warner is just fifth in NFC passer ratings. "We've done a lot of good things, but we've hurt ourselves too much, and that's the big thing," Warner said. "We've made too many little mistakes." A positive sign for the Rams is they've won their first two games on the road despite their problems. They make their home debut this week. The Rams are 16-3 at the Dome at America's Center the last two seasons.

Rams | New Defense | More

Sun, 11 Feb 2001 18:01:05 -0800

According to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch, reporting in the Sporting News, the arrival of Tampa Bay assistant Lovie Smith as defensive coordinator means the Rams will be switching to the "cover-2" base defense. The safeties will now split the field in coverage as the Rams move away from their traditional man-to-man defense. The defense requires more agressive play from the CBs and speed at the linebacker position. The feeling at Rams Park the defense just needs to be average for the team to make another strong run at the Super Bowl title. The Rams want to give WR/PR Az Hakim at least one more shot under new special teams coach Bobby April and new WRs coach Ken Zampese. Another off-season decision facing the Rams is free agent PK Jeff Wilkins. He's due a healthy raise, but Rams management traditionally doesn't like to pay a lot for kickers.

Packers | Looking To Keep Longwell

Wed, 10 Jan 2001 22:39:21 -0800

The Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers have made a priority of re-signing potential free agent PK Ryan Longwell. They have already had begun negotiating with agent Frank Bauer during the season. He wants to stay in Green Bay and he has said he is open to signing a new contract before he hits the free agent market. Free agent S Darren Sharper figures to be the team's top priority, and the Packers also likely will tender first-round offers to restricted free agents such as RB Ahman Green and LB Nate Wayne. GM Ron Wolf knows the value of having a top PK. The bad news for Longwell is that there are several good kickers who will be lining up for free agency including Jeff Wilkins of St. Louis, Morten Anderson of Atlanta and Olindo Mare of Miami.
