Athletics | Coco Crisp still sidelined

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 14:41:05 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (neck) remains out of the starting lineup Monday, July 25. OF Jake Smolinski is starting in center field and is hitting second against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez.

Fantasy Tip: The veteran outfield has a history of neck injuries, so this is something that could keep him out a while longer. Stay tuned for updates. Smolinski is hitting .333 this month and has two homers in his last four games, so he's certainly worth a low-priced flier in DFS against Perez.

Athletics | Coco Crisp scratched from lineup

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 11:23:30 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (neck) was scratched from the starting lineup Sunday, July 24, because of neck soreness. OF Jake Smolinski will start in center field. 3B Danny Valencia will start in right field, while 1B Yonder Alonso will start at first base and is batting eighth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Blake Snell.

Fantasy Tip: Alonso is hitting only .220 with one home run and six RBI against left-handed pitchers this season and probably should be avoided in most leagues.

Athletics | Jake Smolinski gets three hits

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 00:33:43 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Jake Smolinski went 3-for-5 against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Since the All-Star break, Smolinski is 8-for-21 (.381) with a home run and four RBI. The team is looking to getting an extended at Smolinski down the stretch, and he's at least worth owning in all AL-only leagues.

Athletics | Three A's regulars sitting out

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 16:12:37 -0700

Oakland Athletics 3B Danny Valencia, SS Marcus Semien and 1B Billy Butler are not in the starting lineup Friday, July 22. 3B Ryon Healy is at the hot corner and is batting eighth, while SS Arismendy Alcantara is playing shortstop and hitting ninth. OF Jake Smolinski is starting in center field again and is hitting sixth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi.

Fantasy Tip: Healy has seen regular at-bats since his call-up and is hitting .250 with a homer and six RBI in 24 at-bats, but he's merely short-term depth in AL leagues and a low-end deep sleeper pick in DFS. Alcantara has a very limited offensive profile and has no upside hitting low in the order. Smolinski is probably the most attractive of the trio in daily lineups as a value pick after homering last night.

Athletics | Coco Crisp, Yonder Alonso sitting

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 14:34:44 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp and 1B Yonder Alonso are not in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays left-handed SP Matt Moore Thursday, July 21. OF Jake Smolinski is starting in center field and is batting eighth, while 3B Ryon Healy draws in at third base and is hitting ninth. 3B Danny Valencia moves across the diamond to first base and SS Marcus Semien is batting leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: With a lefty on the bump, Crisp and Alonso are rested. Smolinski doesn't move the DFS needle much hitting that low in the order. He's a desperation stab. Healy has looked good so far but is untested and also has limited upside hitting ninth tonight. Both Valencia and Semien have good power and are nice value selections for daily gamers against the lefty.

Athletics | Coco Crisp likely to see less playing time

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 17:10:16 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp is expected to see a reduction of playing time so that the club can get an extended look at OF Jake Smolinski in center field, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp didn't have a great deal of fantasy value before this development and isn't worth rostering outside of AL-only formats at this point. Smolinski has played 118 games in the outfield in his MLB career but entering play Friday, July 15, only one of those appearances had come in center field. He is batting .301 with four homers and 16 RBI through 36 games and is worth owning in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.

Athletics | Coco Crisp will be DH

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 15:39:48 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp will serve as the designated hitter against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman Friday, July 15. OF Jake Smolinski will start in center field and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp is hitting only .233 so far this month and probably can be avoided in some leagues. Smolinski is only four hits in his last 20 at-bats and probably should not be used outside of AL-only leagues.

Athletics | Oakland resting three players

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 09:59:57 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick, C Stephen Vogt and OF Billy Burns are not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Dallas Keuchel Sunday, July 10. OF Coco Crisp will start in center field, while OF Khris Davis will start in left field. 1B Billy Butler will serve as the designated hitter and is batting sixth. OF Jake Smolinski will start in right field and is batting seventh, while C Matt McBride will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Butler has at least one hit in four of his last six games and has two RBI during that span. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options to use. Smolinski has cooled off this month and probably should be avoided. McBride has not done much since being recalled from the minor leagues and should not be used by owners.

Athletics | Billy Butler takes a seat

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 14:20:36 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is not in the starting lineup Thursday, July 7. OF Jake Smolinski draws into the lineup in left field and is batting ninth against Houston Astros SP Doug Fister.

Fantasy Tip: Smolinski has put up a nice line this year (.316/.341/.513) with four home runs and 16 RBI in 82 plate appearances. However, he remains more of a deep sleeper in DFS hitting low in the order, and he's also hit only .250 with none of his four long balls against righties this year.

Athletics | Oakland resting three starters

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 15:09:02 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Stephen Vogt, 1B Yonder Alonso and OF Billy Burns are not in the starting lineup against Minnesota Twins SP Tommy Milone Tuesday, July 5. 1B Billy Butler will start at first base and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Coco Crisp will start in center field, while OF Jake Smolinski will start in left field and is batting eighth. C Matt McBride will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Butler has been playing better lately and is hitting .333 with one home run and 10 RBI against left-handed pitchers. He should be a decent option for owners in daily fantasy leagues. Smolinski can be a sleeper option for owners because he is hitting .429 with one home run and four RBI over the last seven days. McBride is hitting .250 since being recalled from the minor leagues but is not a strong fantasy option.
