Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots LB Monty Beisel said he has spoken with defensive coordinator Dean Pees and was given the indication he will be utilized differently during the 2006 season, possibly to take better advantage of his speed. Beisel has also spent time with new linebackers coach Matt Patricia. Beisel said, "``I think it's going to be really good [with Matt]. That's one thing they talk about around here, when people come and people go, the transition is always smooth. I think it's been seamless so far." Beisel projects to compete with LBs Ryan Claridge, Eric Alexander, Barry Gardner, Larry Izzo and Don Davis for playing time at inside linebacker. If LB Mike Vrabel moves back to outside linebacker, Beisel is a top candidate to start at inside linebacker.

He will be in competition for a key role in the defense this season. "Just being around the guys, Tedy Bruschi, Larry Izzo, Don Davis, I can see from a distance how they do things," Claridge said. "I'm an idiot if I don't follow those guys and run into their back. What they do works, and they know everything. I can take information from them every day."

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports the New England Patriots have re-signed special teams ace/LB Don Davis to a one-year contract extension with a base salary of $770,000. The deal also includes a $25,000 signing bonus and will count $485,000 against the Patriots' salary cap because it qualifies for the minimum salary benefit. Davis was one of 17 Patriots players scheduled for unrestricted free agency in March.

Karen Guregian, of the Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots QB Doug Flutie was run over at practice Monday, Aug. 15, by LB Don Davis, but he's OK. Davis had picked off a Flutie pass over the middle, and ran the ball left toward the end zone a short distance away. Flutie bravely cut over toward the sideline and attempted to make the tackle when Davis ran him over. Davis said he apologized to Flutie for the play.

Michael Felger, of the Boston Herald, reports several New England Patriots' players have commented on LB Tedy Bruschi's (heart) decision to take the season off after suffering a mild stroke in February, and the response has been overwhelmingly in support of the linebacker. "He's a good friend, and I'm happy for him,'' LB Ted Johnson said. "I think there are a lot of things in life a lot more important than football, so I do think this is good news. I don't think there's any reason to rush it. He's still a Patriot." Added LB Don Davis, "There are few players around the league that impact the game or a team in such a way that you have to take notice,'' said Davis. "To me, that's what Tedy Bruschi is. He has that presence and sheer determination. It's a will to win. You look at him and he's not your biggest linebacker or your fastest guy, but he's in the right place at the right time.''

Mike Reiss, of the MetroWest Daily News, reports New England Patriots LB Don Davis took on the role of unofficial assistant strength coach during the offseason. "Basically I took the approach of trying to help out with the strength and conditioning department," Davis said. "I'm nearing the end of my career and I knew there was some changes when Markus (Paul) left and took the head strength training job with the Jets. I knew there would be an opening there, and I knew I still wanted to play. I basically approached (head coach Bill Belichick) about helping out. I told him there was a possibility that might be a field I want to get into." Davis said he didn't attend coaching meetings, opting instead to participate mainly as an observer.

The Post Dispatch reports St. Louis Rams rookie LB Robert Thomas will start Monday night's game. He will start at strongside linebacker, in place of LB Don Davis. Thomas started four straight games earlier this season, but hasn't started since the October 6 game in San Francisco.

The Post Dispatch's Jim Thomas reports the St. Louis Rams have inserted rookie LB Tommy Polley as the starter at OLB in place of LB Mark Fields. The Rams simply didn't feel that Fields was making enough plays at the weakside position. "Mark's not totally out of the rotation," defensive coordinator Lovie Smith said. "But he's further down in the rotation. He'll play. The fourth guy always plays, and we'll do the same thing. He's just going to get the smaller portion of the reps." Don Davis' wrist has healed to the point where Smith feels safe about having him start at the strongside linebacker position for the first time since Oct. 28.

St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz said CB Aeneas Williams (thigh) had full-range of motion on Tuesday and is expected to be fine for this weekend's game. He was feeling a lot better than the team thought he would. S Adam Archuleta (concussion) is expected to return to the starting lineup this weekend while Martz reported no problems for DE Leonard Little (knee) and LB Don Davis (wrist), who are both expected to play again this weekend.

The Post-Dispatch reports despite the fact LB Don Davis (wrist) has returned from his injury, St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz said rookie LB Tommy Polley probably will start Monday against New Orleans. "I think we'll probably leave things status quo right now," Martz said. "Don still has that cast on and there are still some limitations with it, and Tommy is playing really well."

The Post-Dispatch reports St. Louis Rams LB Don Davis (wrist) will be back in action this Sunday, but wearing a cast to protect a dislocated right wrist, he says it's too early to tell whether he'll see much action at linebacker. One thing's for sure, he won't start. He is expected to see action on special teams. "I'll be on kickoffs, punt returns, and I'll be blocking on kickoff returns," Davis said.
