Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland thinks SP Rick Porcello might be overthrowing, which has caused his slider - mostly - to become ineffective. The average velocity on Porcello's fastball and sinker are both up around two mph, but C Alex Avila doesn't think Porcello needs to overthrow to be effective, either.

He also struck out four batters in the 99-pitch quality start, throwing 70 pitches for strikes, lowering his ERA to 1.84. Porcello got 12 of his 23 outs on ground balls.

Detroit Tigers SP Rick Porcello allowed an unearned run and a hit in two innings in his spring debut Tuesday, March 6, against the Miami Marlins. "It's definitely good to see my sinker had good life on it, my four-seamer wasn't as consistent as I'd like it to be at this time of year, but my changeup and slider, I had a pretty good feel for those," Porcello said.
