Kevin Czerwinski, of MiLB.com, reports San Diego Padres P Nicholas Schmidt (elbow), the team's first round selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, underwent Tommy John Surgery earlier this month and is currently rehabbing in Arizona. He is expected to be ready to pitch again by the beginning of next season's instructional league.
