Rangers | J.P. Arencibia makes start at 1B

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 20:41:06 -0700

Texas Rangers C-1B J.P. Arencibia made his first career appearances in the majors at first base Friday, July 18, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He is the eighth different player to start at the position this season for the team. Arencibia was booed before each at-bat against his former team, but he seemed to feed off it. He launched a home run and finished with three RBI.

Fantasy Tip: Arencibia might gain eligibility at first base, but he still needs to show he is much improved from earlier in the season to be trusted in anything more than the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues.

Rangers | J.P. Arencibia could be used at 1B

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 15:27:19 -0700

Texas Rangers C J.P. Arencibia could be used at first base after the team designated 1B Carlos Pena for assignment Thursday, July 17. The Rangers now have four catchers on roster with Cs Robinson Chirinos and Chris Gimenez remain. Arencibia started 20 of his 48 games with Triple-A Round Rock at first base.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers have no other obvious replacement at first base, so Arencibia is probably the favorite to see time there moving forward. He should be added in all AL-only leagues for his power, and the positional eligibility will be nice.

Rangers | Geovany Soto activated

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 14:13:37 -0700

Texas Rangers C Geovany Soto (knee) was activated from the 60-day disabled list Thursday, July 17, and C J.P. Arencibia has been recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.

Fantasy Tip: Soto should see the majority of playing time behind the plate in the second half of the season, to the dismay of Robinson Chirinos.

Rangers | J.P. Arencibia outrighted

Thu, 22 May 2014 23:38:37 -0700

Texas Rangers C J.P. Arencibia, who was optioned to Triple-A earlier this week, has instead been outrighted to the minors after clearing waivers.

Fantasy Tip: If you picked up Arencibia, chances are you've already bashed your head against a wall. Arencibia had one good year with Toronto and it seems so far away. He has a .133 batting average this season. Needless to say, even if Arencibia latches on with another team down the line he carries zero fantasy value.

Rangers | Demote J.P. Arencibia

Tue, 20 May 2014 13:32:22 -0700

The Texas Rangers optioned C J.P. Arencibia to Triple-A Round Rock, purchased the contract of C Chris Gimenez.

Fantasy Tip: Robinson Chirinos has played himself into starter duties. Gimenez isn't fantasy-relevant.

Rangers | Robinson Chirinos set to start entire series

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:04:13 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington will use C Robinson Chirinos for all three games behind the plate this week against the Oakland Athletics, with C J.P. Arencibia starting none. Chirinos started Monday, April 21, is starting Tuesday, April 22, and is likely for Wednesday, April 23. Washington wants to pair Chirinos with SP Martin Perez, as the two are friends and former teammates in Venezuela. Perez is scheduled to start Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Chirinos is worth using as a No. 2 catcher in AL-only fantasy leagues and some deeper mixed formats, while Arencibia is only worth keeping rostered in the deepest of AL play.

Rangers | Robinson Chirinos starting again

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 13:32:58 -0700

Texas Rangers C Robinson Chirinos is starting behind the plate again Wednesday, April 9, after going 2-for-4 with a home run Tuesday, April 8, but manager Ron Washington said C J.P. Arencibia will be back in Friday, April 11. Washington is seeing progress from Arencibia despite his slow start with two hits in 18 at-bats.

Rangers | Start with three catchers

Sat, 29 Mar 2014 20:29:49 -0700

The Texas Rangers will begin the regular season with three catches, mainly because they have to keep C Chris Gimenez after claiming him so late off waivers. Gimenez has no options remaining. C J.P. Arencibia will be the team's opening day starter, with C Robinson Chirinos and Gimenez serving as backups.

Rangers | Not sold on J.P. Arencibia

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 15:44:27 -0700

The Texas Rangers aren't sold on using C J.P. Arencibia as their starting catcher now that C Geovany Soto (knee) will miss extended time. "I haven't seen a whole lot of Arencibia at his best," manager Ron Washington said. C Robinson Chirinos has outplayed Arencibia both offensively and defensively this spring, but Arencibia has more experience in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: If you're searching for a second catcher, you may want to stay away from the situation in Texas. Chirinos may wind up seeing more playing time. It's rather telling that the Rangers are still looking for options outside the organization.
