Texas Rangers C Robinson Chirinos is starting behind the plate again Wednesday, April 9, after going 2-for-4 with a home run Tuesday, April 8, but manager Ron Washington said C J.P. Arencibia will be back in Friday, April 11. Washington is seeing progress from Arencibia despite his slow start with two hits in 18 at-bats.

The Texas Rangers will begin the regular season with three catches, mainly because they have to keep C Chris Gimenez after claiming him so late off waivers. Gimenez has no options remaining. C J.P. Arencibia will be the team's opening day starter, with C Robinson Chirinos and Gimenez serving as backups.

The Texas Rangers aren't sold on using C J.P. Arencibia as their starting catcher now that C Geovany Soto (knee) will miss extended time. "I haven't seen a whole lot of Arencibia at his best," manager Ron Washington said. C Robinson Chirinos has outplayed Arencibia both offensively and defensively this spring, but Arencibia has more experience in the majors.
Fantasy Tip: If you're searching for a second catcher, you may want to stay away from the situation in Texas. Chirinos may wind up seeing more playing time. It's rather telling that the Rangers are still looking for options outside the organization.

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said Cs J.P. Arencibia and Robinson Chirinos will compete for starting catching duties over the next eight days of camp after the injury to C Geovany Soto (knee). Chirinos has had a better camp than Arencibia, but Chirinos has played in only 33 career games.

Texas Rangers C Geovany Soto (knee) will miss 10 to 12 weeks with a torn lateral meniscus in his knee, and he's likely to have surgery Wednesday, March 26.
Fantasy Tip: J.P. Arencibia will open the season as Texas' starting catcher. He's worth a look in league's that start two catchers if you owned Soto or weren't happy with your current second catcher.

Texas Rangers C J.P. Arencibia may lose the backup catcher's position to C Robinson Chirinos following a poor performance this spring. Chirinos is batting .435 with one home run and five RBIs through 13 Cactus League games, while Arencibia has posted a .184 mark with a .205 on-base percentage entering play Saturday, March 22. Both players have options remaining, although Arencibia will make $1.8 million this year.

Texas Rangers C Robinson Chirinos has outperformed C J.P. Arencibia in all aspects to this point of camp, and it has not gone unnoticed by the team's management.

The Texas Rangers agreed to a one-year, $1.8 million deal with free-agent C J.P. Arencibia (Blue Jays) Friday, Dec. 6. Incentives could push the total of the deal to $2.1 million.
Fantasy Tip: Arencibia will serve as the backup to Geovany Soto. Arencibia's power should play nicely in Texas, but you'll have to struggle with his poor batting average and limited playing time, too.

The Texas Rangers are discussing a deal with free-agent C J.P. Arencibia (Blue Jays) that would make him the backup catcher, according to a source. Arencibia was non-tendered by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this week. He hit only .194 with a .227 on-base percentage last season despite hitting 21 home runs and driving in 55 runs. C Geovany Soto is penciled in to be the starter.

However, while the trade was close, the Rangers were reluctant to add another arbitration-eligible player.
