St. Louis Cardinals 2B Daniel Descalso started at shortstop over SS Pete Kozma Sunday, Aug. 18, against a right-handed pitcher, but manager Mike Matheny said there isn't a platoon situation at the position for the rest of the season. "I am still comfortable with (Kozma's defense), but I think we've all been becoming more comfortable with the innings (Descalso) has been playing as well, and how he's swinging the bat at times. I think you're going to see both of them," Matheny said. Kozma was hitting .223 and Descalso was batting .254 entering the game.
Fantasy Tip: Kozma should still be considered the starting shortstop, but it appears that Descalso could cut into his playing time down the stretch if he continues to swing it better.

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Daniel Descalso is starting for the second straight day at shortstop with SS Pete Kozma being benched so that he can work on his swing. Descalso has hit .355 in his last 30 games and had three hits Thursday, July 4. However, manager Mike Matheny was careful to say that there isn't a platoon situation in the works at shortstop. SS Ryan Jackson is batting .306 with a .384 on-base percentage at Triple-A Memphis, but he isn't an option for the team's bench at this moment.
Fantasy Tip: The Cards haven't given up on Kozma just yet, so you should look to retain him in cavernous mixed leagues. Descalso deserves some short-term attention in NL-only leagues.

The St. Louis Cardinals plan on giving SS Pete Kozma a few days off so he can find his swing and his confidence. Manager Mike Matheny said Kozma will return to the lineup when he makes progress during side sessions. Kozma has not gotten a hit in his last 17 at-bats and has only five hits since June 18.

St. Louis Cardinals SS Pete Kozma is expected to receive first crack at the starting shortstop job over SS Ronny Cedeno with SS Rafael Furcal (elbow) likely out this year.

St. Louis Cardinals SS Rafael Furcal (elbow) expects to have the bone spur in his elbow removed at the same time he undergoes Tommy John surgery. Furcal thinks he'll have the operation at some point next week. St. Louis will go with either SSs Pete Kozma or Ronny Cedeno at shortstop with Furcal out for the season. "The way we look at it right now it is certainly going to be a competition between Kozma and Cedeno but there's no doubt that given what Kozma did for us in the last six weeks of the season last year that we so have a high level on confidence that he can continue to do that," general manager John Mozeliak said.

St. Louis Cardinals SS Rafael Furcal (elbow) has felt worse the more he stepped up his throwing program the last few days, and as a result the team is shutting down his activities. Asked if he will be ready for Opening Day on April 1, Furcal said: "I don't know. I wish to know if I will be ready. But you never know." SS Pete Kozma may be pressed into duty if Furcal can't go.

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Daniel Descalso is the favorite to enter the season as the starting second baseman, but 3B Matt Carpenter will challenge him at the position. INFs Pete Kozma and Ryan Jackson are in the mix for bench spots, but 2B Kolten Wong could make his way up at some point if he plays well in the minors.
