The Cincinnati Reds traded C Ryan Hanigan to the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for P David Holmberg in a three-team deal that also included the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Devin Mesoraco will have the opportunity to become a front-line catcher for us," general manager Walt Jocketty said. "Holmberg provides us with the quality pitching depth that every team needs."

Cincinnati Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (elbow) will be activated from the disabled list Wednesday, Aug. 7, and C Ryan Hanigan (wrist) and OF Ryan Ludwick (shoulder) aren't far behind him. Broxton didn't allow a run in two rehab innings with Triple-A Louisville, giving up five hits, no walks and striking out five. Hanigan took batting practice two weeks ago, and his wrist only hurts him when swinging. Hanigan should come off the DL Wednesday or Friday, Aug. 9. Ludwick has played in eight rehab games, but is only 2-for-28 at the plate.
Fantasy Tip: Devin Mesoraco is likely to continue to see the majority of starts behind the dish, especially if Hanigan's wrist still bothers him when swinging. Ludwick should return to his role as the everyday left fielder. He'll be useful in deep mixed leagues with five outfield spots.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (back) did not start Saturday, July 6, or Sunday, July 7, against the Seattle Mariners due to back spasms. C Ryan Hanigan started both games. Mesoraco has also been dealing with a right knee injury which he originally suffered June 29. "I think it's just a day or two thing. We went at it with a bunch of stuff yesterday and it's much better. It's not perfect. If I had to play, I could definitely play. Yesterday, I probably couldn't have," Mesoraco said Sunday.

The Cincinnati Reds activated C Ryan Hanigan (oblique) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 10, and designated C Corky Miller for assignment in a corresponding move. Hanigan went 3-for-8 with Triple-A Louisville on his rehab assignment.
Fantasy Tip: Devin Mesoraco's playing time will diminish and will limit his value to deep two-catcher formats and NL-only setups. Hanigan is more of a defensive-minded backstop, so he, too, should only be started in deeper leagues.

Cincinnati Reds C Ryan Hanigan (oblique, thumb) went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk with Triple-A Louisville Tuesday, May 7. Hanigan caught and played six innings.
Fantasy Tip: Hanigan should return to the primary catching duties for Cincy when he returns, while splitting time with Devin Mesoraco. As a result, both backstops are most valuable in two-catcher of NL-only setups.

Cincinnati Reds C Corky Miller started Tuesday, April 23, against the Chicago Cubs, catching SP Tony Cingrani, whom he has worked with extensively with Triple-A Louisville. "(Miller) is catching Cingrani tonight because he knows Cingrani," manager Dusty Baker said. "(C Devin Mesoraco) had to call him to ask advice about how to catch Cingrani. Now we have the advice-giver in house." It was Miller's first big-league start since Sept. 29, 2010.

Cincinnati Reds C Ryan Hanigan (hand) was hit with a foul ball on his right hand while behind the plate, but manager Dusty Baker said his starting backstop is OK. He's resting Hanigan Wednesday, April 10, because he's off to a 1-for-23 start on the season.
Fantasy Tip: Devin Mesoraco is at least getting an opportunity to play on back-to-back days. It's too quick to say Baker is moving away from the reliable but unexciting (for fantasy purposes) Hanigan, but if Mesoraco acquits himself well at the dish, it's a solid opportunity to earn more at-bats for the balance of the early part of the season. Two-catcher mixed leaguers should take note.
