Reds | Devin Mesoraco to be bench player?

Tue, 26 May 2015 16:47:56 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) is likely to be a bench player when he returns from the disabled list while dealing with a hip impingement, according to manager Bryan Price. It's unknown is Mesoraco will need surgery to fix his injury or if he'll be able to catch again.

Fantasy Tip: The bottom line is that 2015 will be a lost season for Mesoraco, and his owners who spent a high draft pick on him are really paying the price. At this point we hope you've moved on in shallow mixed formats. Brayan Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap), who is hitting .308 (32-for-104), will continue to start behind the dish. It's hard to argue with his price as a value play at FantasyScore when he faces certain right-handed pitchers.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco placed on DL

Mon, 25 May 2015 09:37:47 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, May 25, because of a hip injury. The team also activated RP Manny Parra (neck, elbow) from the 15-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has been limited to pinch hit and designated hitter duties over the last several weeks because of the injury. It is not known when he will be able to catch again. Brayan Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) should continue to be the starting catcher for the Reds and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco suffers setback

Sat, 23 May 2015 12:30:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) tested his hip Friday, May 22, by doing 15 squats, giving signs and trying to get into a catching stance. However, things did not work out as well as planned. "It was very difficult," he said. "(Catching is) probably not something that's going to happen any time soon. It obviously caused some problems afterward. It doesn't make sense to do a whole lot more right now because it doesn't feel good."

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) could wind up undergoing season-ending surgery as a result of this latest setback, although no final decision will be made until the Reds return home from their road trip. FantasyScore owners should avoid using him because he hasn't even been able to serve as a designated hitter in the last two games.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco works on catching stance

Tue, 19 May 2015 18:48:58 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) squatted around 15 times behind the plate before the game Tuesday, May 19, and made around also made some light throws to second base. Mesoraco has not been the starting catcher since April 12 and has considered surgery if the injury does not improve with treatment and therapy.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has been limited to being a pinch hitter and a designated hitter for the last month and does not appear to be close to playing regularly. Owners on FantasyScore probably should avoid using Mesoraco until he sees more playing time.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco the DH Tuesday

Tue, 19 May 2015 15:46:00 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) is serving as the designated hitter and hitting eighth in the batting order against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Tuesday, May 19.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has been kept out of the lineup for most of the season with a hip injury, but this week in an American League park he should see time as the DH, making him relevant once again at FantasyScore. Against the struggling Ventura, Mesoraco could make for a sneaky sleeper pick tonight.

Tue, 12 May 2015 22:36:59 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) delivered a game-winning RBI double as a pinch-hitter Tuesday, May 12, against the Atlanta Braves. It was his first career walk-off hit.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco expected to be DH

Fri, 08 May 2015 11:50:02 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) is expected to serve as the designated hitter against the Chicago White Sox Friday, May 8. Mesoraco is not able to catch, but the team believes he can hit.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has been limited to pinch hit duties over the last few weeks because of his injury. He is only two hits in 22 at-bats this season and probably is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco may be limited all year

Wed, 06 May 2015 07:05:12 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) could be reduced to pinch-hitting and serving as the designated hitter in the team's 10 interleague road games the rest of the season. Manager Bryan Price ruled out Mesoraco trying another position until he's able to catch. Mesoraco can run and hit, but internal rotation of his leg causes pain. "That's when it pinches, which is basically my catching position," Mesoraco said. "We're trying to eliminate as much pain and discomfort as we can."

Fantasy Tip: Mesy ($3,400, 6.8% of your cap) could be the DH this weekend against the Chicago White Sox, which will give his owners some reprieve. However, everything is sounding pretty grim as far as his prospects in the near term. Tucker Barnhart ($1,600, 3.2%) has jacked a couple homers but really isn't an option on FantasyScore.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco likely to need surgery

Tue, 05 May 2015 14:07:26 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) is likely to require surgery on his hip that would need a four-month recovery. However, he's trying to do all possible treatments in the meantime.

Fantasy Tip: It's looking increasingly likely that Mesoraco ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) might not do his fantasy owners any good in 2015 at all. If you haven't already, you'll need to find a capable catching replacement for Mesoraco in standard leagues. Brayan Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is a low-end catching matchup play at FantasyScore.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco hasn't tested hip

Tue, 05 May 2015 13:15:16 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) has yet to test his injured hip by squatting, and he's still trying to avoid surgery, which would cost him four months of rehab. Mesoraco will see at-bats as the designated hitter when the team plays the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) last played Sunday, and it looks like he'll avoid the disabled list for now. But you should avoid him at FantasyScore for the foreseeable future or until he's back in the lineup on a regular basis and catching. Brayan Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is a low-cost consideration against right-handed pitchers in the meantime.
