Cubs | Jason Heyward reporting early

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 11:19:18 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward has reported to camp early to work with hitting coach John Mallee.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward is a tough outfielder to project in fantasy because he doesn't produce a lot in one category, but he has that tantalizing 27-homer season in 2012 in the back of owners' minds. He'll be a solid OF2 that could hit 15 homers and steal 25 bags.

Angels | Halos not pursuing free-agent sluggers

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 17:03:40 -0800

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are not in serious talks with free-agent OFs Yoenis Cespedes (Mets), Alex Gordon (Royals) or Justin Upton (Padres) or free-agent 1B/OF Chris Davis (Orioles), according to owner Arte Moreno. Additionally, Moreno said the club did not make an offer to OF Jason Heyward before he signed with the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: The Angels will likely fill their gaping hole in left field alongside OFs Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun with an internal candidate or lower-profile free agent. OFs David Murphy and Shane Victorino shared time at the position at the end of the 2015 season but both players left via free agency. If the season began today, Daniel Nava and Craig Gentry would be the most likely in-house candidates to play left field but neither player would be useful outside of AL-only fantasy leagues.

Cubs | Jason Heyward to play CF

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 09:14:07 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward will play center field next year unless the Cubs move OF Jorge Soler in a trade. Heyward is slated to bat near the top of the lineup with 2B Ben Zobrist.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward is a real complete player in real life and for his fantasy owners, and joining the Cubbies should make him even more appealing in fantasy drafts. Heyward's contact, on-base and speed skills will play well in the Chicago lineup and will also enhance the value of those hitting around him -- like Kris Bryant, Zobrist and Anthony Rizzo.

Cubs | Jason Heyward took less to join Chicago

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 13:19:59 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward received $200 million offers from the Washington Nationals and another team, believed to be the St. Louis Cardinals, but choose to sign for less with Chicago.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward projects to hit in front of Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant, which was a lineup spot that helped Dexter Fowler cross home plate 102 times last season. Heyward has 20-20 upside, and he is coming off a career-best 2.93 batting average. His five-category contribution will warrant an early middle round selection in redraft leagues.

Cubs | Chicago lands Jason Heyward

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 10:15:51 -0800

Free-agent OF Jason Heyward (Cardinals) will sign with the Chicago Cubs. Terms of a deal were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward will likely play center field for the Cubs next year. He's an above-average defender but might have some growing pains playing center field everyday. Offensively, he had a great season with St. Louis last year, and his on-base and contact skills will make him plenty valuable in Chicago.

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 09:44:50 -0800

Free-agent OF Jason Heyward (Cardinals) appears to have made a decision Friday, Dec. 11, and it doesn't appear to be the St. Louis Cardinals. The Chicago Cubs are in play.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward will be a good OF2 where ever he lands, but Wrigley Field could boost his HR total a bit.

Nationals | Washington in the mix for Jason Heyward

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 14:36:51 -0800

Free-agent OF Jason Heyward (Cardinals) is of interest to Washington Nationals, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: There are a number of teams involved in negotiations with Heyward, and the outfielder is expected to sign sooner than later. He is much more valuable in the real game than in fantasy, but he chips in across all categories, and a 20-20 season isn't out of reach. Stay tuned for an update on where Heyward lands.

Angels | LAA out of big-name outfield market

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 12:27:02 -0800

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are not seriously involved in negotiations with free-agent OFs Jason Heyward (Cardinals), Alex Gordon (Royals), Justin Upton (Padres) and Yoenis Cespedes (Mets), according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Angels are strapped for cash, so the top-tier outfielders in the free-agent market are likely outside their price range. After Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun the Los Angeles outfield is extremely shallow. It is likely the Angels pursue a lower-end outfielder to bolster their depth.
