Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (jaw) took 30 swings in batting practice off a minor league pitcher Wednesday, Sept. 18, the first time he has taken swings against a pitcher since his jaw was broken Aug. 21. Heyward wants to play in a few regular season games before the postseason starts, but he still needs to test his legs and reactions in game speeds. "Kind of see where we are and still continue to look at what the progression should be or can be," general manager Frank Wren said. "It's a very fluid situation, because you're trying to do what's best for him and what's best to get him ready, and also being mindful of his health and how he feels." The Braves could still send Heyward to the instructional league before he gets into a major league game.

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (jaw) took batting practice on the field Friday, Sept. 13, wearing a modified batting helmet with a guard to protect the right side of his face. There is no timetable for his return, but the team is hoping he can be back before the regular season ends Sept. 29. Heyward will face live pitching in the instructional league before then. He also shagged some fly balls in the outfield Friday. The metal plates put into his jaw will remain for the time being.
Fantasy Tip: Realistically, it's not worth holding onto Heyward for a week or less of action. Remember, he wasn't exactly tearing the cover off the baseball before being hit in the face, either, so don't expect him to go off in the final week while he's rusty.
