Washington Nationals RP Ross Detwiler has mainly been used as the team's long reliever or when the game is out of hand this year. He's only once been used to protect a lead, when the team was up six runs against the New York Mets. "It's difficult with Det, because we try to get him in situations where he can go one-plus," manager Matt Williams said. "It's been sporadic. So we'll look to get him in there more often, more regular basis. But with the game today, we've got to get him in there, because we need multiple innings. We were in the game at the time. In case we got back, we needed long (relief)." Detwiler has eight walks in 11 innings this year after typically being a control pitcher.
Fantasy Tip: Detwiler is clearly one of those arms that is more comfortable starting instead of relieving. As long as he's pitching out of the bullpen, he has no fantasy allure.

Washington Nationals SP Ross Detwiler (back) was throwing 94-96 mph during the instructional league during his rehab, and he feels great about his health heading into spring training next year. However, he'll have to compete for a rotation spot after the team added SP Doug Fister in a trade. SPs Taylor Jordan, Tanner Roark, Ross Ohlendorf, Nathan Karns and Sammy Solis are other options to compete with Detwiler. He could also serve as a lefty reliever out of the bullpen.

Washington Nationals SP Ross Detwiler (back) is unlikely to return this season with only 11 games remaining in the regular season. Detwiler threw three innings during a bullpen session Tuesday, Sept. 17, and will pitch in the instructional league Monday, Sept. 23. "If that's the plan, he might as well stay down there," manager Davey Johnson said. "I don't see it. If he gets four days off, there will only be one or two games left. I don't see the point in coming out just for one game for us. That's going to be a decision made down the road." Detwiler hasn't pitched since July 3.

Washington Nationals SP Ross Detwiler (back) threw a full bullpen session Wednesday, Sept. 11, for the second time since going on the disabled list July 4. Detwiler felt good after the throwing session after tossing 30 pitches. His command was sharp. Detwiler will likely throw two more bullpens and then face live hitters in a simulated game. He could return for the final week of the season, but at that point, he'd likely be used as a reliever.
