Orioles | Matt Wieters catches

Fri, 24 Apr 2015 13:34:02 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters (elbow) caught a couple innings in an extended spring training game Friday, April 24. It was the second consecutive day he caught.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and should continued to be stashed in all fantasy formats. In the meantime, Caleb Joseph ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) is an upside FantasyScore play and holds fleeting value in deep mixed and AL-only seasonal leagues. Continue to check back for updates on Wieters' recovery progress and for a timeline on his return.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters is making his way back from reconstructive surgery. There is still no official timetable for his return, so keep using Caleb Joseph at $1,900 (or 3.8% of cap) in FantasyScore.

Orioles | Matt Wieters works out

Fri, 17 Apr 2015 14:36:27 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters (elbow) had six at-bats in a simulated game Friday, April 17, and he also caught one inning.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) could return to the O's early next month if he doesn't suffer any setbacks. Continue to stash him in a DL slot in all fantasy leagues. Until then, Caleb Joseph ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) is a low-end catching matchup play at FantasyScore.

Orioles | Matt Wieters feeling better

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 14:07:54 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters (elbow) received five at-bats in an extended spring training game Tuesday, April 14, and also threw from 150 feet. Wieters is feeling much better and could play in rehab games by the end of May, although manager Buck Showalter hopes that happens sooner.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) won't be back for another month, it sounds like. Caleb Joseph ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) and Ryan Lavarnway ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will continue to share the catching duties. Both catchers are weak FantasyScore plays, but Joseph is a little more intriguing.

Orioles | Matt Wieters to DH Tuesday

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 15:24:15 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters (elbow) took live batting practice from coaches Monday, April 13, and he will serve as the designated hitter in an extended spring game Tuesday, April 14.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) won't return to Baltimore's lineup until at least next month, and you may want to give him some time before trusting him in your FantasyScore lineups. In the meantime, Caleb Joseph ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) and Ryan Lavarnway ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will handle the catching duties. They are both weak daily catching options, depending on the matchups.

Orioles | Matt Wieters rehab update

Sat, 11 Apr 2015 13:29:05 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters (elbow) hit from both sides of the plate while facing coaches Saturday, April 11. He is expected to throw from a distance of 120 feet and catch batting practice Sunday, April 12.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is targeting May 1 as a return date and should continue to be benched in FantasyScore and stashed in seasonal formats. Caleb Joseph ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) will continue receiving the bulk of the playing time behind the plate for now and is worthy of consideration in daily leagues with a favorable pitching matchup.

Orioles | Matt Wieters eyeing May 1?

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 13:27:18 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters (elbow) said Friday, May 1, is a realistic target for his return, but it ultimately depends on how his elbow continues to respond.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to stash Wieters ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) in seasonal formats and avoid him in FantasyScore contests. In his absence, Caleb Joseph ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has fleeting AL-only and cavernous mixed league value. Joseph is also worth a flier in daily contests when facing a favorable pitching matchup. Check back for updates on Wieter's progress as he nears his return.

Orioles | Matt Wieters focusing on health

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 13:00:58 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters (elbow) is simply focusing on health and not on Opening Day. "It's more when it's ready," Wieters said. "I think that's the thing that's probably a little bit easier for me than trying to say 'OK, we have to be ready by here or we have to be ready by here.'"

Fantasy Tip: Wieters is still worth drafting in most every fantasy league, so long as you know he won't be available for a stretch following the season opener. Wieters is doing rehab on his terms and not rushing it, so he should be healthy upon return.

Orioles | Caleb Joseph to catch

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 15:26:27 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Caleb Joseph will likely start the season as the team's primary catcher with C Matt Wieters (elbow) headed to the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Daily leagues are the ones where Joseph owners could see the most benefit, as Joseph will see time behind the plate for at least a few weeks. As for other leagues, Joseph carries lesser fantasy value because Wieters will eventually return to active duty.
