Rangers | Texas had interest in Matt Wieters

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 15:57:23 -0800

The Texas Rangers asked about Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters, but talks went nowhere. Wieters would have needed to accept the deal after agreeing to a qualifying offer.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters' fantasy value has dropped considerably in the last two years due to Tommy John surgery on his elbow. He hit .267 with eight home runs in just 75 games last season. A rebound could be on the horizon with at least one more year in Baltimore. Take advantage of his discounted price while you can for one more season.

Orioles | Matt Wieters to remain in Baltimore

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 11:04:41 -0800

Free-agent C Matt Wieters (Orioles) accepted the Baltimore Orioles' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters will remain in Baltimore for at least another season after hitting .267/.319/.422 with eight home runs and 25 RBI in just 75 games in 2015. Injuries have slowed him down the last few seasons, but when healthy he has 20-homer abilities, especially remaining at hitter-friendly Camden Yards. And the good news is you won't have to pay a very steep price in fantasy drafts for the prospect of a return to those levels.

Orioles | BAL interested in Jarrod Saltalamacchia

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 18:05:51 -0800

The Baltimore Orioles are one of several clubs that have expressed interest in free-agent C Jarrod Saltalamacchia (Diamondbacks), according to an industry source. Baltimore could pursue him if C Matt Wieters declines the team's one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer.

Fantasy Tip: Any team that signs Saltalamacchia would only have to pay him the league minimum because the Miami Marlins are on the hook for the bulk of his $7.5 million contract next year. He hit .251 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs in 70 games for the Diamondbacks after being released by Miami early in the season.

Braves | Atlanta interested in several catchers

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:41:54 -0800

The Atlanta Braves would like to re-sign C A.J. Pierzynski this offseason, but they're also looking at free-agent Cs Matt Wieters and Chris Iannetta (Angels). The qualifying offer to Wieters diminishes some of Atlanta's interest.

Fantasy Tip: It was a shock to see Pierzynski hit .300 (122-for-407) at age 38 while becoming the team's starting catcher. That won't happen again, although he could be an ideal second catcher in two-catcher setups. Wieters has the most offensive upside and fantasy appeal here.

Orioles | Baltimore extends offers to three

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 15:52:31 -0800

Baltimore Orioles impending free-agent 1B Chris Davis, C Matt Wieters and SP Wei-Yin Chen all received qualifying offers worth $15.8 million Friday, Nov. 6. Davis is expected to receive more money on the open market after leading the majors with 47 home runs and driving in 117 runs in 160 games.

Fantasy Tip: Davis will probably remain slightly overvalued in fantasy drafts next year because of power and RBI abilities, but he could lose luster if he departs for a more pitcher-friendly environment. Wieters is an injury risk but presents a nice buy-low opportunity as a catcher that has 20-home pop if healthy. Chen is more of a rotation candidate in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.

Orioles | Matt Wieters may not receive offer

Sat, 17 Oct 2015 05:15:37 -0700

Baltimore Orioles impending free-agent C Matt Wieters may not receive a qualifying offer from the Orioles this offseason unless the team knows he will reject the offer.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters likely will be with a new team next season and should be able to find an everyday job this offseason. He was limited to 75 games this season and posted a .267 average with eight home runs and 25 RBI. Wieters probably should be a solid option in leagues next season if he sees consistent playing time.

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 14:44:51 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters is out of the lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday, Oct. 3, with C Caleb Joseph hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) is facing hard-throwing Luis Severino, and there are better options on FantasyScore.

Orioles | Matt Wieters with off day

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 08:30:13 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters is out of the lineup Thursday, Oct. 1, with C Caleb Joseph hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) hit just .179 in September and isn't a real good option against Drew Hutchinson on FantasyScore.

Orioles | Matt Wieters not in the lineup

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 09:55:57 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters is not in the starting lineup against Boston Red Sox SP Henry Owens Sunday, Sept. 27. C Caleb Joseph will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Wieters ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) likely will return to the lineup in the near future. Joseph ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) is hitting only .194 this month and is not a great starting option on FantasyScore.

Orioles | Matt Wieters returns to lineup

Sat, 26 Sep 2015 12:10:45 -0700

Fantasy Tip: Wieters ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is not a great FantasyScore option this afternoon. He is hitting only .225 this month and is just 3-for-19 against Boston this year.
