Royals | Danny Valencia placed on disabled list

Sun, 01 Jun 2014 11:40:39 -0700

The Kansas City Royals have placed INF Danny Valencia (hand) on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore left hand. In a corresponding move, the team recalled 3B Mike Moustakas from Triple-A Omaha.

Fantasy Tip: Moustakas started at third base and batted eighth Sunday, June 1, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Expect the one-time top prospect to see regular playing time at the hot corner but he should only be considered for AL-only leagues.

Royals | Mike Moustakas sent down

Thu, 22 May 2014 08:58:08 -0700

The Kansas City Royals optioned 3B Mike Moustakas to Triple-A Omaha Thursday, May 22, and recalled INF Jimmy Paredes in a corresponding move. Moustakas was hitting just .152 (19-for-125) with a .543 OPS in 40 games this year, and he was hitting .109 (6-for-55) at home. Paredes is expected to share time at third base with 3B Danny Valencia.

Fantasy Tip: In mixed leagues, there's no reason to hold Moose on your roster as we wait for him to figure something out in the minors. Depending on the size and depth of your AL-only league, it's probably wise to hold onto him if you can. The Royals still view him as a crucial piece to their franchise and will likely give him another shot.

Royals | Mike Moustakas makes offseason adjustments

Tue, 04 Feb 2014 10:32:23 -0800

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas said he's lost around 10 pounds this offseason. "I feel a lot lighter on my feet, I feel great when I'm moving around so I'm a lot more agile right now. So I feel good," Moustakas said. He also put in some hard work in the Venezuelan Winter League this offseason, working with hitting coach Pedro Grifol.

Moustakas finished 2013 hitting just .233 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs. He said Grifol decided that Moustakas needed to get away from pulling everything to right field. He has focused on making solid contact and going up the middle or the other way during winter ball. Moustakas hit .288 and eight of his 19 hits were doubles in Venezuela. He also received plenty of at-bats against left-handed pitchers, whom he struggled against last year. "My strength is my hands and being able to hit the ball to right field," Moustakas said. "I got in trouble by trying to pull it, I just didn't let it happen. So when I tried to pull it, hips flew, shoulders flew, head flew, and I had no chance at making contact."
