Royals | Will give Mike Moustakas more time

Mon, 10 Jun 2013 10:31:31 -0700

The Kansas City Royals are expected to give 3B Mike Moustakas more time to improve now that George Brett has taken over as interim hitting coach. They want Moustakas to have a chance to work with the Hall of Famer. KC also doesn't have a sound replacement for Moustakas. Johnny Giavotella is learning to play third at Triple-A Omaha but is hitting .220 in 35 contests since May 1. Miguel Tejada is simply a part-time player at the moment.

Fantasy Tip: Still, if Moose doesn't show a spark soon, he'll probably be sent packing for a bit. Deep-leaguers could still stash him if they need CI potential, but it's looking like a tiresome exercise.

Royals | Mike Moustakas likely out again Saturday

Fri, 07 Jun 2013 20:03:51 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas was not in the lineup Friday, June 7, as 3B Miguel Tejada made the start against the Houston Astros in his absence. Manager Ned Yost said Moustakas would also likely get a day off Saturday, June 8. "Tejada hadn't played in a couple of days," Yost said. "And with a lefty going (Saturday), we'll probably also give Moose a break then, too. Give Miggy a couple of games."

Fantasy Tip: While Yost feels Moustakas is coming around at the plate, the reality is he is still batting just .180 this season, and Moustakas is 3-for-19 with no RBI in the month of June. Right now, he is only worth using in the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues until he re-gains his form.

Royals | Mike Moustakas likely out Tuesday

Mon, 27 May 2013 16:58:58 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (quadriceps) is likely out of the lineup Tuesday, May 28. Moustakas is also in a 3-for-44 slump.

Fantasy Tip: There is no reason to have Moustakas in your lineup until he can get healthy and find a way out of his slump.

Royals | Mike Moustakas simplifies approach

Wed, 22 May 2013 16:48:20 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas broke out of an 0-for-18 slump with an RBI single Tuesday, May 21. Even though Moustakas is hitting .180 through 39 games, manager Ned Yost sees growth in the youngster. "Last year, when he struggled," Yost said, "I mean, he was a mess. There were times when you'd have to sit him for a 'mental day.' This year, he's been in a great frame of mind." Moustakas' latest struggles made him realize that he needs to simplify his approach. He had been trying to work on mechanical adjustments too much instead of trusting in his abilities.

Fantasy Tip: Benching Moustakas on your fantasy squad is probably the smartest thing to do right now if you're in a league too deep to resort to dropping him. The good news is that Yost remains fully committed to Moose, so sending him down to the minors isn't an option just yet.

Royals | Plan to stick with Mike Moustakas

Sat, 18 May 2013 19:10:45 -0700

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said Saturday, May 18, that he plans to stick with the struggling 3B Mike Moustakas. "The kid is going to be fine," Yost said. "Yes, he's fighting it right now. They're all fighting it. They want success. They want to bring a championship to Kansas City. At times, the desire to win overwhelms them."

Fantasy Tip: Moustakas carried a .189 average into the game Saturday against the Oakland Athletics. At this point, he is only worth using as a corner infielder or utility/designated hitter in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues until he starts to hit with some consistency.

Royals | Alex Gordon on homer binge

Fri, 10 May 2013 10:31:05 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon hit his third home run in as many days Thursday, May 9. 3B Mike Moustakas homered for the second straight game and 1B Eric Hosmer homered for the first time this year in 145 at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon remains hot, but Ned Yost's lineup change may give him a chance to drive in more runs; Gordon was moved from leadoff to the three hole last night, a move that Yost says will stick for a while. Moustakas has turned on a light bulb lately, too, and perhaps hitting lower in the order will begin to benefit Hosmer. Don't give up just yet on the Royals' corner infielders.

Royals | Chris Getz slumping

Tue, 07 May 2013 15:17:01 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Chris Getz is hitting only .216 and is 4-for-37 since hitting a home run April 16. 2B Elliot Johnson started over Getz Tuesday, May 7. "I'm going to start playing Elliot to keep him in the mix," manager Ned Yost said. "Mainly at second. We'll see how it goes. I'll go day to day with it. I want to get Getzie going a little more. He's not swinging the bat like I know he can." 3B Miguel Tejada also started over 3B Mike Moustakas, who is hitting .198 overall and .160 against lefties, Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is only worth considering for a roster spot in deep AL-only universes since Getz still seems to be Yost's primary second baseman in the long run.

Royals | Mike Moustakas unhappy with slow start

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 16:34:50 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas is angry with his slow, unproductive start this season. "It's tough. Nobody wants to do bad on the field, but at the end of the day, we're winning ballgames. We're in first place right now. That makes everything go a lot easier." Moustakas entered play Tuesday, April 23, hitting just .158 with a .226 on-base percentage, and .193 slugging percentage. However, he and the team believe they have identified his problem, as he is drifting forward on pitches, robbing all power from his swing in the process.

Fantasy Tip: Moustakas has been working hard to bust out, including an extensive session of early batting practice Tuesday with hitting coaches Andre David and Jack Maloof looking on. He drove the ball regularly, and with authority. Now, if that can translate into results during game action, he will once again be a must-start fantasy option. For now, he is only worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues until he gets untracked.

Royals | Mike Moustakas still struggling

Mon, 22 Apr 2013 15:11:13 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas is down to a .158 average, and he has only one RBI in 15 games this season. However, manager Ned Yost doesn't plan on benching Moustakas anytime soon. "They're not going to get going while on the bench," Yost said. "There's nothing you can do until they get going. You just ride it." 1B Billy Butler is also hitting only .216.

Fantasy Tip: Unlike Yost, you should probably consider benching Moustakas at this juncture if you have another direction to go in at third base. The good news is that Yost has confidence in Moustakas.
