Rays | Three avoid arbitration

The Tampa Bay Rays avoided arbitration with SP David Price and OF B.J. Upton Tuesday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to one-year deals with both. Price will receive $4.35 million while Upton will make $7 million. RP Burke Badenhop also avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.075 million deal. The team appears headed to arbitration with SP Jeff Niemann.

Rays | Two non-tender candidates

Tampa Bay Rays RPs J.P. Howell and Andy Sonnanstine are likely to be non-tendered by the deadline Monday, Dec. 12. SP Jeff Niemann, RP Joel Peralta, SP David Price and OF B.J. Upton are obvious candidates that will be tendered contracts.

Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price opted out of the final year of his contract Monday, Oct. 31, in favor of arbitration since he owns Super Two status. He was in line to earn $2.433 million next year, but he will now be looking at a large raise.

The Tampa Bay Rays are unlikely to move a starting pitcher until near the end of spring training. They are likely to open camp with a big competition for rotation spots. "I think I'm going to start my workouts in a couple of hours to make sure I can still be in this rotation," Rays SP David Price said shortly after the Rays were eliminated from the playoffs.

Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price allowed three earned runs, seven hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings in Game 3 of the American League Division Series Monday, Oct. 3, against the Texas Rangers. Price has really struggled down the stretch, going winless in his past seven starts dating back to Aug. 28 during the regular season.

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price (chest) is expected to make his scheduled start Friday, Sept. 23. He was hit with a line drive off the upper right side of the chest in the third inning of his outing Sunday, Sept. 18. He had a series of tests at a Boston-area hospital, and he checked out OK. "It was more scary than anything else," Price said. "I feel fine."
