San Diego Padres SP Mat Latos allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits over three innings Saturday, Sept. 5, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to The Associated Press. He walked five, struck out four and committed two balks, falling to 4-5 on the season. Latos was removed after throwing 80 pitches, and he is 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA in his last five games. It was his 10th and final start of the year. "Mat will continue to be with the club," manager Bud Black said. "This season was a learning experience. He showed flashed of tremendous pitching, and he also showed that he needs to improve his game."

Latos already has thrown 53 1/3 innings this season between Double-A San Antonio and Class A Fort Wayne, and general manager Kevin Towers would like him to max out between 100-125 innings. "He's got less than 150 innings in his professional career," Towers said. "At some point, there's a chance he can come up here. But the most he's thrown professionally is 50-60 innings. If he were to come up here and pitch every fifth day, he'd end up with 150-160 innings. If you start tripling their innings, you put 'em in danger and bad things can happen."
