Nationals | Mat Latos signs with Nats

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 09:24:50 -0700

Free-agent SP Mat Latos (White Sox) signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals Thursday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: There's not much to see here. Latos surprised and peaked with Chicago in April and from there faded quickly and ended with a 4.62 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and only 4.8 strikeouts per nine innings. He's purely minor league starting depth for the Nats and is unlikely to be attractive in fantasy again in 2016.

White Sox | Mat Latos released

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 09:08:02 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos was released Thursday, June 16.

Fantasy Tip: Latos had a surprising start to 2016 with the White Sox but quickly went downhill and finished with a 4.62 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and only 4.8 strikeouts per nine innings in 11 starts. He could latch on with another team but won't be guaranteed a rotation spot and is likely to be a fantasy liability.

White Sox | Mat Latos designated for assignment

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 12:38:58 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos was designated for assignment Thursday, June 9.

Fantasy Tip: Latos got off to a surprising strong start with the Pale Hose, but that was the result of some favorable luck and strong matchups. He's since fallen flat and was the odd-man out after the trade for James Shields. There's a chance Latos resurfaces elsewhere and is given a shot at a rotation post, but he's likely seen his fantasy peak in 2016.

White Sox | Mat Latos gets punched around

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 22:52:41 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed six earned runs, five hits and four walks while recording just one strikeout over 4 1/3 innings in a loss Tuesday, June 7, against the Washington Nationals.

Fantasy Tip: Latos lost for just the second time in eight decisions, and his ERA ballooned from 4.02 to 4.62 as a result of the poor outing. He has managed just one quality start over the past seven outings and he is only worth using in AL-only fantasy leagues at this point.

White Sox | Mat Latos struggles Wednesday

Wed, 18 May 2016 21:52:52 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed five runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Houston Astros Wednesday, May 18, to suffer his first loss of the season. He struck out three batters and walked two in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Latos started the season off strong but has allowed at least four runs in each of his last four starts. He is scheduled to face the Cleveland Indians in his next start and but is a risky option because of his recent performances.

White Sox | Mat Latos allows five runs to Texas

Wed, 11 May 2016 15:06:46 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed five runs on seven hits and five walks through 5 1/3 innings during the White Sox's 6-5 loss to the Texas Rangers Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: After sitting with a 0.74 ERA through his first four starts of the season, Latos has allowed 13 earned runs through his past 15 1/3 innings. He should live somewhere in the middle going forward, but he has just 19 strikeouts through 39 2/3 innings this season, so if he can't keep his ratios in check, there is no fantasy value. Be wary of relying on the veteran.

White Sox | Mat Latos does enough to win

Fri, 06 May 2016 22:23:58 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed four earned runs, seven hits and two walks over five innings in a win Friday, May 6, against the Minnesota Twins to improve to 5-0.

Fantasy Tip: Latos wasn't terribly sharp, but he still received plenty of run support to keep him record unblemished. He has re-emerged as a must-start in all AL-only fantasy leagues, most mixed formats and DFS play, too.

White Sox | Mat Latos hit hard in no-decision

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:21:01 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed four runs and a career-high 11 hits over five innings in a no-decision Saturday, April 30, against the Baltimore Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Latos was due to a stinker sooner or later, and this wasn't all that bad. He still has a 1.84 ERA on the season, remaining a must-start in AL-only fantasy leagues and most mixed formats.

White Sox | Mat Latos picks up fourth win

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 15:28:17 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos continued his surprising early-season run against the Texas Rangers on Sunday, April 24, yielding a run on seven hits and two walks while striking out a pair across six innings.

Fantasy Tip: While he can't be expected to maintain this pace, Latos is doing a fine job of pounding the strike zone under the tutelage of renowned pitching coach Don Cooper and the results have been impressive, as he has allowed a total of two runs in 24 1/3 innings while posting a microscopic 0.82 WHIP. The 28-year-old is not a recommended start on the road against the Baltimore Orioles next weekend, but he has certainly earned enough respect from owners to trust against non-elite offenses.

White Sox | Mat Latos pitching inside

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 10:12:54 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos, who is 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA in 18 1/3 innings over his first three starts, said he's made more of an effort to pitch hitters inside this year. "It's definitely a funky movement. He shows the ball behind his back and all of a sudden comes up over his head like a pitching machine," OF Adam Eaton said. "I'm glad he's on my team."

Fantasy Tip: Latos has been one of the biggest pitching surprises up to this point in the early season. Injuries derailed an ugly 2015 in which he had an ERA of 4.95 with three different teams. He's no longer a power pitcher that can get out of jams with strikeouts, and he's relying much more on his control. The fact that he has faced three weaker hitting teams in the A's, Twins and Angels should be factored in. It won't always be this pretty, but Latos can be used as a spot starter in deeper leagues in the right matchups.
