Angels | Jordan Walden looks for better command

Sun, 29 Apr 2012 23:30:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Jordan Walden is working to gain better command of his slider, and build more confidence in his changeup. He recently was stripped of closer duties. "Our preference is to get him into a low-profile inning and let him work on some stuff," manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday, April 29. "He can make adjustments working in the bullpen and pitching some innings that aren't going to be as critical, where he can experiment with a pitch to get a better feel."

Angels | Scott Downs moved to closer role

Fri, 27 Apr 2012 14:16:23 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Scott Downs will move into the closer role with RP Jordan Walden moving to duties in the seventh and eighth innings on a temporary basis.

Fantasy Tip: Emphasis on "temporary basis" .... Clearly, Scioscia is trying to make a statement to his struggling ball club. Hopefully, this is just a case of Walden trying to work on some things. Downs is a skilled reliever worth a stab for saves in any format, but you shouldn't drop Walden or give up anything of long-term value for the fill-in stopper while counting on a year's worth of saves.

Angels | Jason Isringhausen already mentoring young closer

Sun, 26 Feb 2012 20:33:52 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Jason Isringhausen is already mentoring RP Jordan Walden, despite being in camp with the team less than a week. "Like most young closers, he takes it too hard," Isringhausen said. "Bruce Sutter once told me, 'You're the only guy on the team who drives to the ballpark every day knowing that, if you do bad, the team does bad. If it happens, you take a shower and leave it there.' That's a pretty good guy to listen to," Isringhausen said.
