Free-agent RB Shaun Alexander (Redskins) said during a radio interview with KNBR in San Francisco that he would like to return to play for the Washington Redskins this season but is unsure if the opportunity will come. "I don't know. My agents are talking. I would love to," Alexander said. "I'm training with my new trainers up in New Jersey like I'm going to be their (Redskins) guy and come play with them. Of course they have Clinton (Portis) and Ladell (Betts) and they've brought in a couple of guys. For me its like they know what I can do so they're going to check to see what their guys can do and then after that we'll make a decision."

The Associated Press reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (hip) pulled a muscle near his hip in the first half of the team's Week 12 game. He was able to remain the game, though head coach Jim Zorn did prepare RB Shaun Alexander to play in the second half if Portis couldn't go.

Alexander is eager to show teams that he is still the same player who won the league's MVP award in 2005. "Speed, explosiveness and quickness ...," Alexander said. "I don't think that will be an issue." Alexander added, "I'm so hungry," he said. "I'm confident I can still do some productive things in the NFL. I've still got gas in the tank. Some team will be pleasantly surprised when I get there."

In a statement released by RB Shaun Alexander following his release from the Seattle Seahawks, he said that his release wasn't really a surprise. He noted he hoped he could remain with the team and finish his career there but understands things change. "I will be playing for another NFL team this fall, and doing everything I can to contribute. I am healthy, energized and looking forward to beginning the next chapter of my NFL career," Alexander said. He thanked his teammates, coaches and fans, while noting he hopes to return to Seattle one day to face the "daunting task of facing the 12th Man."

Updating an ongoing report, John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Seattle Seahawks have two ways of releasing RB Shaun Alexander. The Seahawks can terminate his contract, which would cost the team $125,000 in cap loss. The second option is the team could release him under a June 2 designation, which would save the team $4.475 million in 2008 salary cap but the team would then be responsible for $4.6 million on their 2009 cap.
