John Clayton of ESPN.com reports Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren has backed off on signing free agent QB Mark Rypien (Colts), for now. The Seahawks concern is wasting $450,000 of cap room and $750,000 of salary for a quarterback who is only going to be around for a couple of weeks. The team is going to temporarily go with young QBs Jeff Kelly and Ryan Van Dyke as backups.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Seattle Seahawks have reached an agreement with rookie QB Jeff Kelly. The agreement is a three-year contract with base salaries of $225,000 (2002), $300,000 (2003) and $380,000 (2004) with a signing bonus of $31,000. Kelly's salary will count $235,333 against the cap value for the 2002 season.
