Sun, 19 May 2013 12:30:37 -0700 Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves RP Eric O'Flaherty (elbow) will visit Dr. James Andrews Monday, May 20. He is expected to need season-ending Tommy John surgery, although he is holding out hope that he could pitch again this year after resting for several weeks. "I'm trying to be optimistic, but they're making surgery appointments already," O'Flaherty said. "I don't know, it's not looking too good. The vibe I'm getting from doctors and the front office and stuff, it seems like they're not too optimistic."
Sat, 18 May 2013 19:04:12 -0700 Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves RP Eric O'Flaherty (elbow) had an MRI Saturday, May 18, which showed a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament. O'Flaherty is expected to visit renowned Dr. James Andrews later this week.
Sat, 18 May 2013 13:01:15 -0700 The Atlanta Braves have placed RP Eric O'Flaherty (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list because of a left elbow strain. In a corresponding move, P Cory Rasmus has been recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Thu, 16 May 2013 12:27:55 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jonny Venters (elbow) will undergo his second Tommy John surgery of his career and will miss the rest of the year. He underwent the elbow reconstruction to fix the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow Thursday, May 16. Fantasy Tip: Venters was used heavily out of the Braves' 'pen the last few seasons, and it has caught up to him. Craig Kimbrel is the unquestioned closer on this team, but Eric O'Flaherty and Jordan Walden will have bigger roles as setup men as a result.
Wed, 08 May 2013 11:24:59 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel might not be available to pitch Wednesday, May 8, because manager Fredi Gonzalez doesn't want to pitch Kimbrel for three days in a row this early in the year. Kimbrel has blown three of his last five save chances. He was an out away from his 100th career save Tuesday, May 7, before allowing a home run to the Cincinnati Reds. "It is what it is," Gonzalez said. "At the end of the year, (Kimbrel's) going to have 40-something saves and five blown saves or four blown saves. It just so happens he's getting them right here in a little bunch. No worries." Kimbrel's ERA has risen from 0.00 to 3.38 in his last five outings. Fantasy Tip: As Gonzalez noted, there is no closer controversy with Kimbrel, he's just hit a little rough patch. Atlanta also has no clear candidate to take over the closer's role regardless. Eric O'Flaherty or Jordan Walden would likely close if a save situation arises Wednesday.
Mon, 11 Mar 2013 12:57:20 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Jordan Walden (back) remains out with a bulging disc in his back. RP Eric O'Flaherty (groin) will make his spring debut Tuesday, March 12. RP Cory Gearrin has likely secured a spot in the bullpen with Walden hurt.
Sun, 10 Mar 2013 09:31:50 -0700 Atlanta Braves RP Eric O'Flaherty (groin) threw a five-minute pain-free batting practice session Sunday, March 10. He is expected to make his spring debut later this week. O'Flaherty has been bothered by a strained left groin.
Thu, 07 Mar 2013 12:58:42 -0800 Atlanta Braves RP Eric O'Flaherty (groin) could be pitching in spring games by the middle of next week. He has worked on his arm strength in bullpen sessions and will next face hitters in live batting practice. Flaherty is mainly trying to pace himself with an extended spring training schedule.
Tue, 05 Mar 2013 15:07:26 -0800 Atlanta Braves RPs Jordan Walden (back) and Eric O'Flaherty (groin) have only made one spring outing between the two of them. O'Flaherty is being held out as more of a precaution and Walden hasn't pitched since Feb. 23 due to a back strain. Both players are expected to have time to be ready for opening day.
Fri, 01 Mar 2013 21:41:18 -0800 Atlanta Braves RP Eric O'Flaherty (back) has not dealt with any discomfort in his back through the first three weeks of spring training, but manager Fredi Gonzalez said Friday, March 1, that the decision made to delay his first appearance until at least the second week of the exhibition season was due to his previous history with back problems. "I did a lot of work in the offseason, and my back has never felt better than it does right now," O'Flaherty said. "It has not been an issue at all."
