Texans | J.J. Watt uncertain about return date

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 12:53:40 -0700

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) acknowledged Sunday, July 31, he isn't certain when he'll return from back surgery. "I can't put a solid start date on when I can play. … I don't plan on missing my first game, but I can't promise it. … I feel good. My body feels good. It is just a matter of listening to (the doctors). I'll do whatever they tell me to do," Watt told HoustonTexans.com. Head coach Bill O'Brien said Sunday that Watt is "on the right track," but the Texans have no intention to rush the three-time Defensive Player of the Year back onto the field.

Texans | Tom Savage eyeing starting QB job

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 10:42:29 -0800

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage is intent on winning the starting job, especially in the wake of the news that team owner Bob McNair has reportedly made it very clear to general manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O'Brien that the Texans replace Brian Hoyer.

Fantasy Tip: There seems to be some thought that Savage will compete with a first- or second-round rookie for the starting job in training camp. The loser of that competition would then fall behind Hoyer, who the Texans seem to like in a backup role. Even in O'Brien's quarterback-friendly system, Savage or the yet-to-be-named rookie would likely be little more than a low-end QB2 at best in 2016.

Texans | Brian Hoyer unlikely to be Week 1 starter

Mon, 15 Feb 2016 11:21:52 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer is unlikely to begin next season as the starter. Team owner Bob McNair has all but publicly demanded general manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O'Brien replace the journeyman.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer melted down in the Texans' playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which was probably the final straw for McNair. Houston has been linked to almost every potential free-agent quarterback - such as Robert Griffin III - to most of the top signal-callers available in the draft that could be on the board at pick No. 22, such as Memphis' Paxton Lynch or Michigan State's Connor Cook. Either way, fantasy owners should expect Hoyer to holding a clipboard for most of 2016.

Texans | Bill O'Brien, GM safe

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 09:29:45 -0800

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith will work with each other for a third straight year in 2016, according to owner Bob McNair. "I see no reason they (Smith and O'Brien) can't (work together). They've been working together. They're bright, and they're independent and they express their opinions," McNair said.

Texans | Alfred Blue draws praise

Tue, 22 Dec 2015 18:21:29 -0800

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue was praised for his performance against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15 by head coach Bill O'Brien. "Alfred Blue, other than the fumble, he ran with a purpose and I think that was a big part of the game," O'Brien said.

Fantasy Tip: With Houston down to Brandon Weeden at quarterback, Blue ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) should be in line for a big workload against an average Tennessee rush defense in Week 16. Blue could be a solid source of cap relief at FantasyScore.

Texans | HC wants better run defense

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 11:42:34 -0700

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said the Texans need to stop the run in order to get better on defense. Houston has allowed five rushing touchdowns in their last two games and is surrendering 114.2 rushing yards per game. "If we can stop the run better and get teams in longer yardage, that may be able to help us," O'Brien said. "If you don't stop the run, that's going to be a problem."

Texans | Houston not ready to name starting QB

Mon, 14 Sep 2015 12:42:40 -0700

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said he has a good idea of who will be the starting quarterback against the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 but is not ready to announce it at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer started in Week 1 but was benched during the game and was replaced by Ryan Mallett, who played well in his limited time. Mallett could be the leading candidate to start, but neither quarterback is a great fantasy option in any league.

Sun, 06 Sep 2015 15:40:56 -0700

Texans | Nuke, Nate Washington top depth chart

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 22:53:33 -0700

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Nate Washington are atop the depth chart right now, head coach Bill O'Brien said Monday, Aug. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Hopkins will be the receiver fantasy owners target early on draft day, but there could be some value with Washington in the middle to late rounds if he can maintain a starting role. You could do worse for your WR4 or flex fantasy option in standard fantasy formats.

Texans | Ryan Mallet works with first-team

Sun, 02 Aug 2015 16:16:04 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallet worked with the first-team offense Sunday, Aug. 2, after QB Brian Hoyer worked with the first-team Saturday, Aug. 1. "Whenever he (Bill O'Brien) feels like someone is ready to be named the starter that's what he'll do, and whatever way it goes, I have really a lot of trust and faith in him," Hoyer said. "Whatever he decides will be best for the team."

Fantasy Tip: It wouldn't be a surprise to see both Hoyer and Mallet start games this year, but don't expect either quarterback to be more than a mid-range QB2.

Texans | Case Keenum gets vote of confidence

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 04:23:16 -0800

Houston Texans QB Case Keenum picked up a vote of confidence from head coach Bill O'Brien, who called Keenum a "very viable" option at quarterback for 2015.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien did not specify whether he meant Keenum had a future as backup or as a starter. Keep in mind the Texans have Ryan Mallett as well at quarterback, and Mallett worked well under Tom Brady in New England. Keenum's fantasy value depends entirely on whether he starts or holds a clipboard, so wait and see how this develops.

Texans | Houston QB unknown until Sunday

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 13:29:57 -0800

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said he won't reveal who the starting quarterback will be this week prior to Sunday's game.

Fantasy Tip: Thaddeus Lewis and Case Keenum are the likely candidates to start, but neither is worth investing in on FantasyScore unless you want to spend big at other positions.

Texans | Coach supportive of Jadeveon Clowney

Tue, 02 Dec 2014 03:46:13 -0800

Despite outside criticism of his frequent injuries, Houston Texans OLB Jadeveon Clowney has the strong backing of head coach Bill O'Brien, who said Clowney has simply been unlucky with his knee problems. "This guy has worked extremely hard to recover from injuries," O'Brien said. "And I want to be real clear about this with him, as it relates to us here to the Houston Texans. We think very highly of him. We know he's going to be a really good player... He's had a sports hernia, he's had a concussion and now he's dealing with a knee injury. Those things are not easy in your rookie year."

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 10:51:57 -0700

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien named QB Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team's starting quarterback Tuesday, June 17.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick should be considered a mid-range backup and a bye-week replacement at best. His value will take a hit if the Andre Johnson situation is not resolved.

Mon, 02 Jun 2014 23:36:15 -0700

Houston Texans KR Keshawn Martin will have some competition for the kick returning job this season, which is what new coach Bill O'Brien wanted. "Preseason is when we really have to get a true evaluation of the guys who are back there and who is going to return punts, who are going to be the kickoff return guys, and who will be the emergency guys if something happens to the starters." O'Brien said.

"We're trying to mimic them right now." O'Brien has also been speeding up the tempo of the team's practices since taking over.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins frustrated

Thu, 29 May 2014 08:01:21 -0700

Houston Texas WR DeAndre Hopkins has admitted that he's struggling to pick up the new offense under head coach Bill O'Brien as well as connect with the new group of quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: The second-year snare has all the tools to take a step forward but has a situation similar to a rookie's. He's a fine speculation as a low-end WR3 in fantasy drafts, but it may take a bit for him to start going in the 2014 season.
