Brees is battling with Dave Dickenson for the backup job behind starter Doug Flutie. Flutie isn't expected to see any more than a quarter worth of action this weekend, and Brees and Dickenson will handle the rest of the game. The team may give Dickenson more playing time than Brees simply because he hasn't played much since the 49ers game earlier this pre-season.

Bernie Wilson reports for the Associated Press San Diego Chargers backup QB Dave Dickenson hit rookie DeRonnie Pitts with a 3-yard TD pass with 39 seconds left, then hit Patrick Batteaux with the 2-point conversion pass to give the Chargers a win on Saturday night. Starting QB Doug Flutie threw a 7-yard pass to WR Curtis Conway. RB Ronney Jenkins scored on a 29-yard run. For the 49ers starting QB Jeff Garcia threw a 16-yard TD pass to rookie WR Cedrick Wilson. RB Terry Jackson had 12-yard run for a TD and WR Dwight Carter had a TD catch. RB Garrison Hearst started and finished with 9 yards on 5 carries. He caught one pass for 15 yards.

The team's official site reports San Diego Chargers starting C Roman Fortin returned to practice earlier today. Fortin previously had been forced to watch from the sidelines since the start of camp while rehabbing from off-season surgery on both knees. On Monday he only did light work. Fortin is a little ahead of schedule in his rehab. DL Adrian Dingle and Mike Pringley were able to return to the morning practice today. QB Dave Dickenson, RB Ronney Jenkins, FB/TE Marty Maurer, CB Alex Molden, LB Sam Rogers and DT Scott Shultz also were back on the field this morning. WR Jeff Graham returned as well. He had been at memorial services for the late Korey Stringer.

The Associated Press reports the San Diego Chargers had to cancel a scrimmage today because they have so many injuries. Among the injured players are LB Junior Seau (Achilles' tendon), WR Curtis Conway (groin), DE Marcellus Wiley (hamstring) and QB Dave Dickenson, the former CFL star who has a tired arm from throwing so many passes. The team is down to one fully healthy RB, recently signed Madre Hill. Coach Mike Riley thinks most of the injured players will be OK to practice Monday morning.

Nick Canepa, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports for the Sporting News that the San Diego Chargers quarterback depth chart for the upcoming year appears to be starter Doug Flutie, followed by rookie Drew Brees, ex-CFLer Dave Dickenson and rookie Bart Hendricks. Thus, there is some concern about what could happen should Flutie go down with an injury as none of the other QBs have any NFL experience. If the team decides to keep four QBs, Hendricks is likely headed to the practice squad.

Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers head coach Mike Riley was excited about having QB Drew Brees on the field with the team for the first time today throwing passes. Riley said it was obvious that Brees has been working out and his passes looked good. Right now, the No. 2 QB job is up for grabs and Brees will be battling with Dave Dickenson and Moses Moreno for the job. Brees, because he won't be able to attend voluntary workouts the next few weeks, will be taking most of the snaps as the No. 2 QB during mini-camp this weekend.

One one the quiet battles at backup is already beginning as Moses Moreno and Dave Dickenson are battling for a backup quarterback job. "Everything's up in the air ... we're out here battling," Moreno stated.

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers QB Dave Dickenson sounds happy that he gave up the CFL for a shot at the NFL. Dickenson has been taking part in voluntary Chargers workouts for several weeks. He and QB Moses Moreno have been working out four days a week in San Diego, throwing to receivers and learning the system of new offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Dickenson said he's pretty comfortable with how he's doing so far. Dickenson said he doesn't have any inside information about San Diego's draft plans and QB Michael Vick. Dickenson said he's been assigned No. 15, the same number he wore with Calgary.

Jim Trotter reports for the Union-Tribune the San Diego Chargers began introducing parts of their passing game to their wide receivers, tight ends and running backs during a voluntary workout yesterday. The talk of the day was details. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner wants the team remembering the details like fullbacks not tipping their hand to defenders by chopping their feet coming out of the backfield. 13 players were on hand yesterday. The Chargers will continue the workouts twice a week this month, then conduct a mandatory mini-camp the first week in May. Among the players present were WRs Jeff Graham and Curtis Conway, TEs Freddie Jones, Steve Heiden and Reggie Davis and QBs Moses Moreno and Dave Dickenson. QB Doug Flutie and RB Terrell Fletcher were away on personal matters but are expected to participate later this week or early next week.

The Associated Press reports former CFL QB Dave Dickenson is looking forward to his opportunity to play in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers. "I still like my chances of making the team, earning the No. 2 job and getting some playing time." None of last season's QBs will be back with the team so the team will still do some maneuvering at QB. The first of those moves is the expected drafting of QB Michael Vick in the NFL Draft in April. Dickenson said he thinks the Chargers made a wise decision to get QB Doug Flutie. Dickenson moved to San Diego during the weekend, where he plans to spend a month or so working out and meeting players and coaches. His agent, Ken Staninger, thinks Flutie and Dickenson will form a good 1-2 punch for the 2001 season.

The Calgary Sun reports negotiations between the San Diego Chargers and CFL QB Dave Dickenson apparently will go right down to the deadline wire. NFL teams have until 3 p.m. tomorrow to sign CFL option-year players. Dickenson's agent, Ken Staninger, has already turned down three Chargers offers. The Chargers have turned down two counter proposals. The signing bonus remains the obstacle. The agent said the talked to San Diego again yesterday. The Calgary Sun reports CFL QB Dave Dickenson is close to signing with the San Diego Chargers. The Calgary Stampeders have pretty much conceded they'll lose their most vital player. GM/head coach Wally Buono of Calgary said San Diego would not waste all this time if it was not going to happen. Buono is not happy at the way things have been handled by San Diego. Dickenson's agent, Ken Staninger, was a little more cautious in assessing the situation. "I talked to San Diego again and we exchanged some things but not any financial numbers. We're no further ahead than we were a few days ago," said Staninger.
