Saints | Drew Brees deal must be right for everyone

Sat, 19 May 2012 04:44:43 -0700

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said he isn't taking any of franchise free-agent QB Drew Brees' recent complaints about the slow pace of contract negotiations personally; however, Loomis added a new deal must benefit both sides. "I feel for him. I feel with him. He wants to be here right now. I want him to be here right now and we'll work hard to get that accomplished," Loomis said. "It's important to Drew, but it's important to our team. The magnitude of this contract is going to impact our team for a long period of time, so we've got to get it right. It's got to be right for Drew, but it's got to be right for our team as well."

The team placed the exclusive rights franchise tag on Brees in March, and the sides have until July 16 to work out a long-term extension. "It's been extremely frustrating for me," Brees said. "I don't think the negotiation should have been this difficult." Brees added that he didn't think there has been a sense of urgency from the team.

Saints | GM confident in Drew Brees

Tue, 15 May 2012 11:58:07 -0700

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis doesn't expect any drop-off with QB Drew Brees this year in the absence of head coach Sean Payton, mostly because of the presence of offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, who has worked with Brees since 2002. "(Carmichael's) in tune with Drew, and he's in tune with Sean and what he is looking for offensively in terms of rhythm as well as scheme," Loomis said. "Sean's been able to mentor him as he's come along. He's grown each year, and he did a fantastic job last year when Sean was down. If not for that, I think that would've been an uncertainty with us - we'd think Pete could do a good job, but now we know." However, Brees is in a contract standoff with the team currently and isn't working out.

"That didn't work out too well for me. I've talked to the Saints about this many times. They definitely know my desire to have a long-term deal, and hopefully they want me to have that as well. We will continue discussions and hopefully get a long-term deal done."

"I did not participate in any bounty program, nor did I have any knowledge relating to its real existence," Brees said. "I have spent the last several years as an Executive Committee Member of the NFLPA making health and safety a priority and I am proud of the advancements we've made and will continue to make."

Saints | Drew Brees rejected lucrative deal

Wed, 07 Mar 2012 18:27:36 -0800

The New Orleans Saints offered QB Drew Brees more than $18.5 million per season, and the quarterback turned them down. The team also offered Brees a $30 million signing bonus. The deal Brees rejected would have given him the second-highest amount of guaranteed money in NFL history in the first three years of his deal. Brees countered by demanding $23 million per season. The deal from the team is reportedly still on the table, but the club had no choice but to use the franchise tag on him, which reportedly made Brees unhappy.

Saints | GM says Drew Brees a great QB

Sat, 03 Mar 2012 07:49:31 -0800

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis has refuted a report he doesn't believe impending free-agent QB Drew Brees is a "great" player. The size of the team's reported contract offer would seem to reflect as much. According to a league source, Brees and his agent, Tom Condon, turned down an offer that would have made Brees the highest-paid player in the NFL. Loomis said it was "ridiculous" to believe he doesn't think of Brees as a great player. Although Loomis wouldn't go into specifics about a contract, he added that the team appreciates Brees' greatness. "We're trying to pay him accordingly," Loomis said.

Saints | Drew Brees may have to be franchised

Fri, 02 Mar 2012 10:01:58 -0800

The New Orleans Saints unofficially have until March 5 to reach a long-term deal with unrestricted free-agent QB Drew Brees. Continuing an ongoing storyline, March 5 is the deadline for teams to use their franchise tag on a player, so if Brees doesn't have a new deal in place by then the team will be forced to tag him, which gives him a guaranteed one-year deal worth nearly $14.4 million. However, that situation is not ideal for either party because Brees wants the security of a long-term deal and the Saints may need to use their franchise tag on another free agent, possibly G Carl Nicks.

During the negotiations, Brees has insisted a new deal will be done before March 5. Whether or not the gap can be bridged in three days has yet to be seen, as indications are the Saints and Brees' agent, Tom Condon, are not on the same page in how the deal should be structured. Condon could make a strong case that Brees should and deserves to be the highest-paid player in NFL history. He is also the person that worked a $90 million, five-year deal last year for Peyton Manning with the Indianapolis Colts, which averaged more than $23 million a year in the first three years. Brees' camp could be targeting that much, or more, in a new deal. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and Condon won't comment on whether they are optimistic a deal can be put in place soon.

The New Orleans Saints committed extra blockers on the offensive side of the ball to keep the Detroit Lions from putting pressure on QB Drew Brees in the Wild Card playoff game last weekend. "Our game plan, honestly, was to get pressure on Drew Brees all night, but they do some things to slow down teams with good pass rushers, as far as doubling, chipping, keeping more guys in the pocket and having two-man routes," Lions DL Cliff Avril said. "It definitely made it a little more difficult getting to Brees throughout night." The Lions blitzed only on 10 percent of Brees' passes.

Tue, 27 Dec 2011 08:55:07 -0800

Some Atlanta Falcons players were irked following Week 16 that New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees set the single-season passing record with the team already leading by 22 points with less than three minutes to play. "No need for that," one Falcons player said. "It came on our watch, but it didn't have to come that way. We won't forget it." Saints head coach Sean Payton defended the decision to go for the record. "Someone is going to ask this question, so I am going to answer it before it's asked," Payton said during his postgame media session. "Typically, would I be throwing it there? The answer would be probably not. In fact, the answer would be 'I wouldn't be.' But I thought it was appropriate that we get the record. And we did it. We have a ton of respect for (Falcons coach) Mike (Smith), his staff and his players. It seemed like the right thing to do. I felt real good about the decision."
