Saints | Drew Brees wants long career

Fri, 22 May 2015 11:15:55 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he may not be able to play until he is 45 years old like he previously stated but wants to play as long as he can.

Fantasy Tip: Brees likely has a few more good years left in his career and will have some solid weapons to work with even though he lost Jimmy Graham. Brees should be a starting quarterback most weeks next season but may be risky against certain matchups.

Saints | Drew Brees discusses his future

Thu, 21 May 2015 07:25:06 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is entering his age-36 season and said playing until he is 45 years old might be "overzealous." Brees noted that "45 is a long way away." He added, "At different stages in your career, I just think you kind of reassess and reevaluate and try to set goals moving forward. It was just kind of one of those moments last year where my body felt great, felt like I had a great system in place with my training and my recovery and my diet and everything, gosh, why not?"

Fantasy Tip: Rarely does an NFL quarterback survive that long, but Warren Moon playing at a fairly high level until he was 44 is probably the most recent example of it being possible. At 36, with his fantasy value likely in decline, Brees shouldn't be more than a year-to-year consideration as long as he is playing well.

Saints | Drew Brees not worried

Tue, 19 May 2015 09:29:41 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he is unconcerned that the Saints drafted QB Garrett Grayson, his heir apparent, in the third round of this year's draft. "I'm worried about winning a championship," Brees said. "Trying to be the best player I can be, trying to be the leader that I can be, that applies to how can I help get the best out of everyone who is on the team."

Fantasy Tip: Brees is the starter heading into 2015 and only an injury will change that. At 36 years old, though, the days of 5,000-yard, 35-touchdown seasons are likely a thing of the past, especially with the Saints seemingly adjusting their offense to be more reliant on the run. Brees' weapons in the passing game are more suspect now, too, after losing Kenny Stills and Jimmy Graham in trades. Still, he'll be a QB1 most weeks, just don't expect him to be the Brees of the past.

Saints | Drew Brees expected to play for a while

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 14:03:35 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees isn't expected to be retiring anytime soon, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. "I don't see the end for Drew Brees on the short-term horizon," Loomis said. "At least I certainly hope not. But it does take time for these quarterbacks to develop. And we're conscious of that." Loomis could be hinting at the possibility of the Saints drafting a quarterback, perhaps as an heir apparent to Brees. The team has already worked out Baylor QB Bryce Petty.

Fantasy Tip: Brees lost some valuable weapons this offseason in TE Jimmy Graham (Seahawks) and WR Kenny Stills (Dolphins), but he should still be thought of as a top-tier fantasy quarterback with how much the Saints like to pass the football. Brees has thrown for at least 4,300 yards and 33 touchdowns in his last seven seasons.

Saints | Brandin Cooks spent time with QB

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 20:32:44 -0700

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks (knee) spent time training together with QB Drew Brees during the offseason in San Diego. "Man, I love everything about him, his makeup, and then just his physical ability. I mean he's got all kinds of talent," Brees said.

Fantasy Tip: With Jimmy Graham having been dealt to Seattle, Cooks will have a prominent role in the offense. He is expected to start alongside Marques Colston, and could very well be the No. 1 receiving option in the offense if he isn't that already. Consider him a top-flight WR2 entering the season, as he makes his way back from a knee injury. He could emerge as a low-end WR1 by season's end for fantasy owners.

Saints | Marcus Mariota won't go to Saints

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 13:50:40 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota isn't an option for the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said the Saints will not move up in the first round in order to select Mariota. Payton also said there wasn't "one iota" of truth to rumors that New Orleans is looking to trade QB Drew Brees.

Fantasy Tip: The knock on Mariota is that he played in a spread offense in college that may not translate well to NFL offenses. However, he's likely to go early in the first round to a QB-needy team and compete for a starting job right away. Mariota may be worth a late-round flier in fantasy drafts, but you shouldn't expect much out of him right away.

Saints | Drew Brees not on trade block

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 10:12:29 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees will not be traded, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Recent speculation said that Brees may be on the trade block after his favorite target, TE Jimmy Graham, was dealt to the Seattle Seahawks. "Anybody who thinks we're trading Drew Brees, that's just not true," Loomis told USA TODAY Sports. Brees threw for 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2014 while completing 69.2% of his passes for a league-high 4,952 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Brees will continue to be a QB1 for fantasy owners in 2015, but you may want to temper your expectations a bit after he lost both Graham and Kenny Stills this offseason.

Saints | Drew Brees a trade option?

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 15:20:46 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees might not be off limits in a trade this offseason that has already seen the team trade TE Jimmy Graham, OG Ben Grubbs and WR Kenny Stills. The Saints have begun to think about life after Brees, and a report surfaced late last year that the team is likely to "draft a quarterback highly this year."

Fantasy Tip: Without Graham and Stills in the picture in 2015, Brees' fantasy prospects are dimming as he gets older. The Saints are expected to shift to more of a ground-and-pound mentality, which isn't good news for Brees' fantasy value. He'll likely continue to be drafted as a top-tier signal caller, but that price may disappoint his owners in 2015.

Saints | No extension for Drew Brees?

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 16:56:24 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees doesn't need to receive a contract extension for the team to get under the 2015 salary cap, according to head coach Sean Payton. Brees has two years left on his five-year, $100 million deal, with salary cap hits of $26.4 million and $27.4 million in 2015 and 2016. The Saints are currently projected at $25 to $30 million over the cap.

Fantasy Tip: Brees once again should be a top-tier QB1 in 2015, especially with Brandin Cooks expected to return for a healthy season. Brees managed 4,952 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2014 in a "down" year for New Orleans.

Saints | Drew Brees optimistic about future

Tue, 27 Jan 2015 15:53:58 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said 2014 was the most frustrating season of his career, but remained optimistic about the team's future. "I think we've identified the problems or the things that got us beat or the things that didn't allow us to be as good as we know we can be, and we have the solution to fix it," Brees said. "It's going to take a lot of work, but I know we can get it done."

Fantasy Tip: Brees still threw for 4,952 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2014. He's proven to be one of the most consistent quarterbacks in fantasy football and real football. Consider him No. 1 quarterback option next season, as usual.
