Fri, 01 May 2009 10:23:46 -0700 Mike Klis, of The Denver Post, reports free-agent RB Selvin Young (Broncos) has a herniated disc in his neck that won't be healed completely until September at the earliest. He has received two opinions on the neck, one being rest for six months and the other being surgery. If he went the surgery route, he could be back by June but it would also carry a higher risk long-term. He opted against surgery.

He said he cannot let himself become complacent because that would lead to a decline in his production. He feels he needs to improve on catching the ball out of the backfield as well as making longer runs. Young believes he put in the necessary work during the offseason. "I was really diligent about paying attention to the details, and I hope it is going to show once the season starts. I've been catching balls, playing with the football, sleeping with the football and just going back to the things I was doing as a little kid," Young said. He also said he spent a lot of time working on his legs so he remains fresh in the fourth quarter this season.

"He has had a good offseason and hopefully it pays dividends for him," Shanahan said. He noted Young is about 215 pounds and in "great shape." He went on to state there is a big learning curve between the first and second season, but the Broncos are hopeful Young can take advantage of it. Young said he is feeling "really good" right now.
