Jon Ralph, of the Herald Sun, reports Australian Football League P Anthony Rocca is hoping to follow in the footsteps of NFL punters Ben Graham (New York Jets), Darren Bennett (Minnesota Vikings) and Mat McBriar (Dallas Cowboys) and land in the NFL. "I have always had a bit of an interest in it," he said Friday, Dec. 16. Like Graham, Rocca is aligned to Ricky Nixon's Flying Start management group, which could help set up trials with NFL clubs.

Kevin Seifert, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice said P Darren Bennett will remain on the roster for the team's Week 15 game in case P Chris Kluwe (knee) can't play. Tice is hoping Kluwe can recover by Sunday, Dec. 18, but Bennett will be available if Kluwe has a setback.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice said P Darren Bennett, cut Sunday, Sept. 5, could return to the team for their Week 2 contest. The Vikings will keep looking at punters, but Tice said Bennett will definitely not be re-signed for Week 1. Releasing him now gave the Vikings additional financial flexibility for this season; had Bennett been on the roster for the opening game, the Vikings would have been required to guarantee his $765,000 base salary for the season. If they re-sign him after the first game, they will be responsible only for the prorated portion of that salary.

Tice is enamored with Dorsch's leg strength, but Dorsch has been unable to show any form of consistency in practice or in games.

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings P Travis Dorsch is now expected to challenge incumbent P Darren Bennett for his job. "Going into the game, I didn't think there was a competition," head coach Mike Tice said, indicating that he expected Bennett to handily win the job. "It is now, and that's just the way it's going to be." Things seemed to change after Bennett's first punt during last night's preseason game traveled 29 yards.

Bill Williamson, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings P Eddie Johnson's agent, Ken Harris, said the Vikings let him speak with other teams about Johnson. Harris said he spoke to four teams, but he doesn't expect the Vikings to trade him before the NFL Draft. The Vikings have told Harris that Johnson won't be released and will compete with Darren Bennett for the starting job during training camp.

Chargers.com reports San Diego Chargers TE Freddie Jones sat out of practice during Sunday's mini-camp because he hurt his toe during previous workouts. WR Rodney Williams suffered a knee injury on Sunday morning but the team's trainers don't believe it's serious. P Darren Bennett, WR Tim Dwight and C Roman Fortin did not take part in mini-camp as they're recovering from minor injuries. DL Michael Mohring also missed most of the mini-camp work due to injury.

According to their official site, the Chicago Bears have allocated 10 players to NFL Europe. They are: P Brent Bartholomew, CB Todd McMillon, OC Brad Williams, RB Brian Edwards, WRs Corey Bridges, Ahmad Merritt and Gerald Williams, SS Pedro Cirino, CB Lamar Grant, and DT Jerome King. Bartholomew should be pleased to learn that both of last season's Pro Bowl punters, Arizona's Scott Player and San Diego's Darren Bennett, previously played in NFL Europe.

The North County Times reports San Diego Chargers, at the tail end of a horrible season, had a few individual players receive some honor as LB Junior Seau and P Darren Bennett were both voted into the Pro Bowl. DT John Parrella, TE Freddie Jones and SS Rodney Harrison were all named as Pro Bowl alternates this year.
