Chargers | Schottenheimer Disappointed In OL Play

Thu, 11 Sep 2003 09:57:11 -0700

Jim Trotter of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer was extremely disappointed with the play of the Chargers' offensive line Sunday, Sept. 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs. "We were physically beaten on a number of occasions," said Schottenheimer. Chargers OT Damion McIntosh was beaten for three first-half sacks by Chiefs DE Vonnie Holliday, and the right-side tandem of OG Solomon Page and OT Vaughn Parker, along with FB Lorenzo Neal, was unable to get enough push for RB LaDainian Tomlinson to pick up first downs on short-yardage siutations. The failure to convert the rushes was particularly painful for Schottenheimer because he made his coaching reputation playing power football. But the inability to protect QB Drew Brees consistently was bothersome because Schottenheimer said the team will need an efficient passing game to have any shot at reaching the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
