Chargers | Draft Key Too

Sun, 08 Apr 2001 14:49:42 -0700

Jay Paris reports for the North County Times San Diego Chargers owner Alex Spanos is upbeat about the team's off-season moves, but he cautions the NFL Draft is still on the horizon. The team does not have the greatest track record in the draft. At least from last year's draft, S Rogers Beckett has moved into the starting lineup. Besides Rogers, the last five drafts have only produced two starters, TE Freddie Jones and DT Jamal Williams. It could be three if free agent OL Raleigh Roundtree re-signs with the team. Spanos feels the team's off-season moves and the potential addition of QB Michael Vick will wipe out the memories of last season's 1-15 record. Spanos thinks the team is in for a good year in 2001.

Gogan said the release might mark the end of his career. OLG Raleigh Roundtree is an unrestricted free agent and isn't expected to be brought back. The team has yet to make an offer to OLT Ben Coleman, an unrestricted free agent. Backup OL Kendyl Jacox is a restricted free agent who has been discussing a multiyear deal with the team, but his recent change in agents has slowed negotiations. Word is he wants to test the open market. The Chargers have until tomorrow to tender offers to restricted and exclusive-rights free agents.
