The San Diego Chargers have announced they have released LB Antwan Applewhite, LB Erik Bakhtiari, WR Gary Banks, CB Tra Battle, CB Josh Bell, TE Wade Betschart, SS Brian Bonner, RB Eldra Buckley, DL Andre Coleman, DT Lamar Divens, OL Brandyn Dombrowski, DL Keith Grennan, DL Keith Jackson, WR Mark Jones, OT Tyler Luellen, LB Terna Nande, OT Tony Pape, LB Carlos Polk, OG Erik Robertson and RB Marcus B. Thomas.

San Diego Chargers LB Carlos Polk was selected as the team's Most Inspirational Player along with QB Philip Rivers. Polk recorded 14 tackles, 11 special teams stops and two forced fumbles before being injured in Week 11.

San Diego Chargers LB Carlos Polk could replace LB Shawne Merriman if he is suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's steroids policy. Merriman is appealing the suspension after his "A" and "B" samples came back positive for steroids.

While Phillips expects to be an every-down player, another option for the team is to use LB Carlos Polk on running plays and Phillips on passing situations.

Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers LB Carlos Polk is back on the field from an Achilles' injury that cost him the 2005 season. "I can't tell you how good it feels to just be out there again," Polk said. "Sometimes these drills are tough because they're minimum contact and I'm really itching to hit someone. We've done some good work this week and hopefully it will translate. I'm just focused on staying healthy and getting out there this fall when I can lay the wood to opponents."

Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers LB Carlos Polk (Achilles') is rehabbing from last season's Achilles' injury. With his contract set to expire at the end of the 2005 season, Polk knew that he had to continue to impress Chargers brass in order to get another shot. Last week, he was awarded a new one-year contract that gives him an opportunity to get back on the field in the fall. Although the team's offseason program doesn't officially start for another five weeks, Polk is a regular in the weight room at Chargers Park. His attitude and work ethic have not gone unnoticed by his head coach, Marty Schottenheimer.
